True story: one of KMH's (two) employees was once a member of a band whose guitar player owned a Marshall amp that worked sporadically.

Kicking it seemed to help. At least in the short term. Maybe less so in the long run, as the amp eventually died in an explosion of smoky static.

Back then (the early 2000s), a replacement amplifier was a few hundred dollars. It might as well have been MILLIONS of dollars, though, when we lived paycheck-to-paycheck and played all of our shows for the nominal fee of "exposure."

I think that's why we have a soft spot for used amps like the $80 30-watt Rockville we just took in.

True, it doesn't have much for effects. And, no, it doesn't have 'that legendary Fender tone' or the 'unmistakable Marshall vibe.'

But it ALSO doesn't require kick-starting halfway through a song.

Whoever you are, be it the serious tone chaser with a solid bank account hankering for a Laney tube amp or a teenager scraping together the leftovers of their part-time paycheck, we really do want to help. One of our favorite things is when a dusty guitar with green frets and black crusty strings comes back to life on our bench.

We took this guitar in trade, and honestly, we weren’t sure how it would clean up. But after a couple treatments with various cleaning compounds and polishes, even WE were caught off guard by how beautiful this guitar turned out to be.

It’s an Ibanez SA260FM with a wonderfully contoured top and back, a super-smooth gliding tremelo, a coil tap on the humbucker, and a really nice red burst flamed maple top.

New, they’re $600-ish; we don’t have much into this one, so we marked it at $350.

CDs are back! And frankly, we can't understand why they ever went away.

Yes, streaming services cut down on clutter, and you never have to worry about scratches or skips. But when it comes to quickly choosing something to listen to, I'll take flipping through a binder of CDs over staring blankly at an interface ANY day.

There's something comforting about picking up that Audioslave CD, knowing you're somehow physically holding the music in your hands: it's yours entirely, not subject to internet failure or streaming device mishaps or random ad interruptions.

We just took in dozens of great albums in fantastic shape, all $3 each. If you too are a CompactDisc Connoisseur, (a) welcome to the club! (Not the kind where you get 12 CDs for a penny and then a horrible credit score for ten years; that's a different club.)

And (b) get here fast, before someone else cherry picks your favorite albums.

After approximately 14 months of winter, it's finally time for the summer concert season. And let me tell ya, we are ALL FOR IT.

In preparation, we just bulked up our selection of performing equipment with things like:

-$37.99 boom mic stands (priced at $57.99 online)

We've also brought in a new product for us, born out of frustration. YES, those $37.99 boom microphone stands are a great deal. However, they're also not very tough. They're lightweight, so they tip over easily in the wind (fun!). The plastic or cheap metal screws strip out over time. Parts fall off.

That's fine if you're only playing a show or two, but if your band needs your equipment to be reliable for show after show regardless of weather conditions or how it was gently-placed/tossed/thrown-hastily-because-it's-hailing into the trailer, maybe it's worth paying extra for something that won't drive you nuts.

We’ve noticed a sharp (but unsurprising) uptick in our guitar pedal sales since adding lots of JHS and Electroharmonix pedals to our stock.

We're old.

Believe it or not, you whippersnappers out there in Facebook-land, once upon a time the only way to make your guitar sound like 100 different things was to have at least 60 different pedals.

Given that pedals were generally $60 and up, that kinda hurt the wallet.

And then one fateful day, some unknown genius invented

THE DIGITECH MULTI-EFFECTS PEDAL - a device that contained circuitry emulating ALL SORTS of guitar pedals. Even better, though, it featured settings that sounded like lots of those pedals combined (i.e. setting one was a phaser and flanger and light distortion and heavy reverb and a little bit of chorus; setting two was a reverse flanger and an auto-wah and super-heavy distortion and LOTS of chorus, etc.)

It changed the game forever. Suddenly even a beginning guitar player with the most meager of budgets could afford to make their guitar sound like TEN THOUSAND DIFFERENT THINGS.

It was great!

And then one fateful day, Digitech decided that it was time to move on to different things. They phased out their multi-pedals and shifted to other products -- a huge blunder, in our humble opinion, and a shameful loss for our the guitar-playing universe.

Luckily, however, old Digitech RP-units still show up from time to time. Matter of fact, we got one in just last week -- with the proper a/c power supply AND a nifty carrying case, even! NICE!

We tried it out, and we can verify: they're still fun. Very fun. Well worth the price of a single pedal. Probably even worth the drive to our shop to nab it before someone else does.
