Pieceful Design Welcome to Pieceful Design! Jennifer is currently the most over-educated stay-at-home mom in Arizona. Her drug of choice was fabric.

Although originally gainfully employed, a series of cross-country moves in the last decade convinced her to abandon that Ivy League education and focus on her children. But, alas, with all that free time, Jennifer quickly descended into addiction. Quilting was her gateway drug, and she joyfully hand-quilted several quilts for friends and family. Sadly, though, she discovered that working with just

a few fabrics at a time was just not enough anymore; she needed the “high” of creating with a variety of fabrics on a daily basis. Eventually, she taught herself to make baskets and bowls out of beautifully color-saturated batik fabrics. Jennifer now spends virtually every day creating these pieces: wrapping strips of these rich fabrics around cotton clothesline, which she then coils and sews into circles, ovals, hearts, and even, sadly, triangles. Although Jennifer claims that there is a genetic predisposition to fabric addiction, she can’t blame the generations of quilters that came before her. Jennifer is currently residing in Scottsdale with her ever-patient husband, two scary-smart kids, and a very uncooperative dog.

A longer video that explains what I call “machine geometry.” I get a lot of questions about how to make the sides perpendicular. Technique is only part of the equation; machine geometry is probably even more important. Be sure to watch through to the end for the complete explanation.

One of the most challenging parts of bowl making— starting the sides. While technique plays a part, machine geometry really determines how perpendicular you can get the sides. Look for a video later this week discussing this idea. No time for that today— we’re at the beach!

Slowly moving along with this piece. You know it’s not going to JUST be a pink bowl, right? I think I’ve probably given away the next color in this shot— but you can also see the amazing fabric gradation that I’ll be working with. for the win!

Speedy stitches and a pop of color? Welcome to the weekend. Here’s hoping you can take a little bit of time out of your hectic life to be creative. Pull out that fabric, dust off those paints, flour up your hands— and make something that makes you smile!

I often get requests for videos showing the whole process. Well, here’s the thing— making a full piece isn’t quick (and it’s not always pretty). I show the process in bits and pieces because very few people want to watch a multi-minute video. It also takes a ton of time to record, edit and prep videos. As a creator, there’s only so much time in the day— and the algorithm wants new content every day. So, yes, you only get a little bit at a time because that’s the system we have. Anyway, here the very beginning of a new piece. I don’t often show this part as it’s slow and you can’t see much action. I suspect this video won’t get much traction…..BUT, if you want to see more long form content like this (without a lot of action!), watch it through a few times AND like and SHARE. That helps the algorithm (and me!) know that this is what folks want to see!

Most of the time I have the necessary patience. Other times I end up screaming and cursing (I’m also quite creative in my cursing. It’s another habit I’m quite good at). Nonetheless, I do seem to have quite a bit of perseverance.

If you’ve been waiting to see what color comes next for this bowl— watch to the end and you’ll get your answer! I love the magic of a good Ombre-striped fabric. It really adds an impact to a piece that would be less effective if you just switched fabrics.

If you make art, you’re an artist. If you create something, you are creative. Enjoy the process…even if the product isn’t quite what you imagined. The process is just as essential as the product.

Just a little gentle sewing zen to put you in a creative mood as we head towards the weekend. The world is still in an uproar— though it seems like the new normal, it’s not good for our mental health. Try to make some time to take a break from screens and media and make something with your hands. You’ll feel better, I promise.
