Independence Day

From our ruler to our enemy, who then became our friend
We gained our independence, something all of us defend
Where once we were outnumbered, our backs against the wall
Old glory kept on flying, an inspiration to us all
The bravery of so many, who fought with grit through pain
We forced them to surrender and sent them home again
Now we are strong and mighty, the home of the brave
We don't forget our hero's and the sacrifice they gave
So, each year in their honor and forever in their debt
A special national holiday, which shows we won’t forget
So, celebrate with your family and friends, and together simply say
We thank you for your service and our Independence Day.

Where your heart is

You tiptoe slowly into the great unknown
Exploring places as you wildly roam
Yet a piece of you always stays at home
That's where your heart is.

Meeting people along the way
Watching sunsets and the break of day
But from your roots you could never stray
As, that's where your heart is.

Chills of winter, the warmth of the sun
Older and wiser you stride to become
Remembering always where it all begun
Because, that's where your heart is.

Problems and puzzles put you to the test
Some you may solve, if you tried your best
Then return to your sanctuary, so that you may rest
Yes, that's where your heart is.

Memorial Day, not a Long Weekend.

What time does your shift start?
Do you punch a clock or sign in?
It's hard for me to pinpoint
When my workday does begin.

Sometimes we eat a breakfast
Before marching to our posts.
But often we just scramble
Without a single slice of toast.

When the enemy makes a move
We must be there to counteract.
You're never sure of a place or time
When they may launch their next attack.

We cover one another,
We're more a family than a workforce
We serve the people of our country
And our CO of course.

The job we do isn't easy
We can't clock off and just leave.
We are here protecting your freedom
And the things we all believe.

So honor those now back home
Who served in Korea, Vietnam and Iraq
And say a meaningful prayer
For those that never made it back.

Someone to Listen

I just need somebody to listen
Show empathy, understanding and love.
I don't want someone who will judge me
As my judge is my God up above.

While your opinion may be valid and plausible
It’s not what I need to hear.
I so need a friend and confidant
Who is willing to lend me their ear.

What I have to say, I feel deeply about
It may not be right or wrong.
It’s about a goodbye, that may make you cry
Like the words of an old country song.

So, if you are feeling kind hearted
And have some spare time you can share.
Come over and help me unload
This troublesome burden I bear.

It may not be very exciting
But please, stay with me until the end.
If you will be the one, who will listen
I'll know, I at least have a friend.

Love Ends

It’s not as if I did not know
The time had come to let you go
My head agrees but my heart says no
The pain is more than I can bare.
They say in life we set our pace
No need to rush, it’s not a race
Remembering our favorite place
I can still see you standing there.
I loved you more than you will know
It is my fault, it didn’t show
So now you tell me you must go
But you won’t even tell me where.
Covered your tracks and left no trace
Except the tears running down my face
It seems you’ve given up the chase
You act like you no longer care.
I tell myself you’re coming home
But I just sit here on my own
Staring at my silent phone
Trying to ignore your empty chair.
Friends tell me I must move on
Accept the fact then you have gone
Was our love real or just a con
Forgetting the vows that we did swear.
I only wish the best for you
In everything you plan to do
My dream was I would be there too
But no one said that love was fair.
So now I’m bidding you goodbye
Although distressed I will not cry
I know my love will never die
Though yours has vanished in thin air.
Is this really where love ends
Did you love me or just pretend
It seems we can’t even be friends
With just our memories left to share.

Her glass of wine

Oh sweet bouquet of scented grapes
A delightfully fresh aroma
So softly moistening her pallet
Awakens her, from this boring coma.

Slightly fruity with chocolate undertones
Igniting her inner senses
With such a rush, this taste grand slam
Has got her swinging for the fences.

Each gentle sip, she would not gulp
Delivers a sensation of its own making
A feeling of warmth and passion
No kidology or faking.

As she lowers the glass down from her lips
Her whole face is alight with a smile.
The look of contentment she projects
Will stay with me for quite some while.

A look of longing from her expectant eyes
Reminds me of what I've been taught.
When a woman looks at you like that
You should pop another cork.

Lost Love

Frustration grips your inner soul
Like mud wrestling by yourself
There is no way to win
So you lay there self defeated.
Anger at your own inadequacy
Your blindness at the situation
Unable to see what was expected of you
And deaf to the signs and warnings
You classify yourself a failure
But it’s worse than that
As others see your shortcomings too
Stuck in the mire and unable to hide
You offer yourself as a sacrifice
Before understanding that
You've already become one
Such is the pain of a lost love.

Love Yourself

What fuels the anger that builds inside
Like a volcano building to its eruption.
What causes emotional mood swings
That can change at the slightest interruption.

How do we let our peace get shattered
By the most insignificant of things.
Alternating between laughing and crying
And the happiness and sadness they bring.

We seek solace from something or someone
When we really should turn to our self.
Yet we're scared of being alone
Like a spinster who was left on the shelf.

Is the answer at the end of a bottle?
Or does that just multiply the real pain.
The substance we seek to feel better
Is our confidence, which we must regain.

To share your love with another
Takes patience, understanding and care
But you can't share your love with anyone
If your love for yourself isn't there.

Mind Train

My heart is heavy, like thunder clouds
But my eyes refuse to rain.
They smile when faced by others
And don’t disclose my inner pain.
The complexity of the mind
Is finely balanced on the scale.
Like a steam train locomotive
Running smoothly along the rail.
Mood swings are just my carriages
That were boarded at the station.
Each one ready to disembark
At it’s desired destination.
But as the engineer
I should control each curve or bend.
Do I stop at every opportunity
Or carry on to journeys end.
When at last I see a signal
Telling me I must slow down.
My fuel levels been depleted
I’ve run myself into the ground.
Each journey I have taken
Has been a challenge or a test.
Until I reached my depot
And was finally laid to rest.

The Royal Oak

The royal oak is still standing
As the construction crews draw near.
This Sir Lancelot of the woodland
Now deprived of his sweet Guinevere.
While all around him were slaughtered
He stood in defiant splendor.
Unable to prevent the carnage
But refusing to yield and surrender.
The town folk fought for conservation
But the fat cats money was to strong.
One tree was all we were asking for
To remain in the place it belonged.
We held a candlelight vigil
And chained ourselves to his trunk.
But the mechanical army was relentless
And cast us aside, like we were junk.
We prayed for a stay of ex*****on
So that this historic landmark could remain.
But they laughed as they cut him to the ground
Treating him with their total disdain.
Now the woodlands is full of houses
With shops and offices a plenty.
And although it is full of bricks and mortar
To me, the landscape is barren and empty.
The destruction of nature for progress
Is a pill just to big to swallow.
To give up all of our yesterdays
Will not guarantee our tomorrow.

Getting ready for the Kentucky Derby.

Derby Prep by Trevor Reynolds

The tranquility of the dawn
Hides the activity of what's to come.
A bird song from the rooftop
Tells of horses on the run.
The early morning gallop of a highly rated c**t.
Held firmly by his jockey
For fear that he would bolt.
The trainer with his stopwatch
Eyes expectantly from the rail.
The timing must be perfect
Or the master plan will fail.
As he nears the 3 pole marker
He is hurried in his pace.
Today there is no opposition
But there will be in the race.
His stride begins to lengthen
With a strong increase in speed.
If he does this on Saturday
He'll surely take the lead.
Staying on in a fast finish
Is a skill he'll need the most.
To ensure that on this Derby day
He is first to past the post.

As years go by and the past sinks deeper into obscurity. May we always remember the lives lost during the 1st World War.

The Poppy Fields of Death

A field of splendid color
Stretches far across the plane
This rosy red silk blanket
That hides the tales of death and pain.
So many men were slaughtered
Each taking their last breath
While serving king and countries
On the poppy fields of death.
They fought in Northern France
And in Belgium's Flanders fields
Young men from many nations
Were mercilessly shot and killed.
Not realizing their future
They gave their life to rest
With both enemy and comrades
On the poppy fields of death.
How long will we remember
The sacrifice they made
The importance of their legacy
And the part their courage played.
They helped to mold our lives
By giving of their best
So long ago and far from home
On the poppy fields of death.
