URGENT: Living Liver donor Needed for Katie Osypiewski
Katie is a loving 40-year-old mother to a 13 year-old son who needs his mom healthy and by his side. She is a daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and an incredible friend. If you know Katie, you love her!!
Katie was recently diagnosed with severe liver disease and is now in desperate need of a living liver donor. Her MELD (Model for End Stage Liver Disease) score continues to climb every week and time is becoming critical.
Katie is also currently on dialysis due to kidney disease and will eventually need a kidney transplant as well. While people can survive on dialysis for some time, you cannot live without a functioning liver.

Many people want to help but are unsure what living donation involves. Here are some important facts:
- The liver is the ONLY organ that can regenerate itself. After donation, your liver grows back within approximately 8-12 weeks.
- The donated portion of your liver also grows inside the recipient.
-All medical expenses related to living liver donation are covered for the donor.
-The National Living Donor Assistance Center may help reimburse travel expenses, lost wages, childcare, and dependent care costs.
- Some states, including New York, offer additional financial assistance for donor expenses such as meals and lodging.
-Some employers provide paid organ donor leave
- Most donors recover in about 6 weeks- and that short time can give Katie years, even decades, of life.
-Testing to become a donor is much easier than many people think. It generally includes bloodwork, imaging (CT or MRI) and health screening questions.
-Waiting for a deceased donor liver can take 1-2 years. With a living donor, the process can begin immediately.
