We’ve had quite a few people asking us about THCP lately, especially as it seems to be popping up everywhere in flower, pre-rolls, and other smokable products.
So we wanted to take a moment to talk about what THCP flower actually is and why we have personally chosen not to carry it.
First, THCP is a real, naturally occurring cannabinoid. It was identified in cannabis/h**p relatively recently, but the most important part to note is that it only naturally occurs in extremely small amounts, like teeny tiny.
Because THCP naturally occurs in trace amounts, most of the THCP flower and pre-rolls you're seeing didn't naturally grow that way.
That's one of the biggest differences between THCP flower and traditional THCA flower.
Most THCA flower naturally develops its cannabinoid profile while the plant is growing, and the THCA content is already present in the flower when it's harvested, the way nature intended.
THCP flower, on the other hand, is often created by starting with a low-grade h**p flower and then adding THCP distillate through a spraying or coating process. It may appear extra frosty, heavily coated, unusually sticky, and have high percentages that seem almost too good to be true.
And while both products may be sold in the h**p market as “flower”, they're typically produced very differently.
So why is it popping up everywhere?
Well, as regulations continue to change and certain products become harder to source, what usually follows is a surge of “alternatives" trying to fill those gaps.
The market doesn't stop, it shifts. And we’re seeing that happen in real time.
And we’ve chosen not to make that shift.
We’ve always held our products to a very high standard, and that goes far beyond just what’s on the label. We pay attention to how products are grown, how they’re processed, how cannabinoids are extracted, what ingredients are used, lab reports, and whether or not we feel confident standing behind them from start to finish.
For us, it isn’t just the fact that something was added to the flower, it’s everything that comes along with that. Where did the THCP come from? How was it produced? What testing was performed? What ingredients, solvents, or processing methods were used along the way?
When transparency on a product starts becoming harder to navigate, we don’t feel confident introducing it to consumers, and THCP flower just isn’t something we can stand behind.
This post isn’t at all meant to push fear, judgment, or tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t buy. We have had a ton of questions, and believe everyone has a right to know what they’re putting into their bodies, how those products are made, and what separates one product from another.
Transparency has always been important to us, and you deserve to be educated so you can feel confident in the products you choose to consume.
And if you ever have question, or are curious about a cannabinoid, product, or even a lab report, bring it by or give us a call. We’re always more than happy to help.
With so much love,
-The Coastal Buds Team
