The Pacific Northwest's Source for outdoor equipment, knowledge and service since 1937.

Mountain Shop was founded in 1937 by local climber/skier Everett Darr and his wife. Together they imported pitons and crampons from Europe and made climbing packs for their friends. Through several owners and locations, Mountain Shop has remained a locally owned and operated store, making it the oldest (that we know of) shop of its kind in the country.

If you’ve ever been interested in doing some basic at home ski and snowboard care but not sure where to start, or maybe you’ve dabbled but could use a refresher - start here!

The Sams will go over all the basics you need to know - all the tools, tips, and tricks that will get you feeling confident about waxing your skis or board at home to help keep them in shape to shred.

👋 Meet Steve. He’s been at Mountain Shop since around the time that fourth pic was taken (jk… but fr he’s been here a long time.) Steve is as much a staple to Mountain Shop, as Mountain Shop is to Portland. And he’s the reason why we have such an awesome backpacking department - if you need something, there’s a pretty good chance we have it! Steve comes with a ton of knowledge and experience in this area, so if you’re looking for the best advice for your adventure, he’s the guy to ask!

And if we’re talking about Steve, you know we’re also talking about Jacqui, Steve’s sidekick and our most senior shop dog. When they’re not at Mountain Shop, Steve and Jacqui do Search and Rescue together!

Pro Tip: when you’re at the shop, be sure to check the dog bed next to the register - it’s highly likely you’ll find Jacqui there, hoping to get some pets.

ONE MONTH AWAY! Warren Miller’s Days Off tour is coming to town on Sunday November 8th! And we’ll be there to hang, do a lil snow dance, and just generally spread good vibes & pray for snow.

There will be awesome prizes up for grabs during the show and, as always, the main course - an epic winter film - will be on deck to ring in the official start of winter!

In the market for new ski boots this season? There’s more to it than you might think. Deets below ⬇️

1 - You and your friend don’t have the same feet. It stands to reason you wouldn’t have the same boots.

2 - It’s a good place to start, but mondo sizes don’t translate directly from street shoe sizes. The best way to know for sure is to get your foot measured in mondo size

3 - Brand loyalty is cool but every brand builds their boots differently - and some builds are just not going to be the right fit. In a similar vein, flex ratings are a decent indicator of how soft or stiff a boot may be in a lineup, but it’s important to remember they’re not standardized across brands. IE: a 120 in one boot can feel like a 100 in another boot. It really depends on the user, the construction, and the materials.

4 - Sizing up is not always the answer, and can sometimes do more harm than good. As a general rule, every part of your foot and ankle should be in contact with your boot. If the boot fits but you’ve got pain or discomfort in specific areas, there’s usually modifications that can address that.

5 - We always recommend a professional boot fitting for ski boots. A boot fitter can take your measurements, analyze your stance, recommend mods, address pain and hot spots, and get you all the nitty gritty details about each boot.
