The winter months always have my mood reader self reaching for graphic novels and comics. I found one of my fave comic book series in 2023, Saga. Saga is a mix of scifi, fantasy, and romance with q***r characters throughout every story line. It gives game of thrones vibes as in it's very adult with a lot of killing. The making of a great adult comic.

Cosmoknights and Nubia are just as good but are young adult. Nubia is a fantasy set in the marvel universe whereas Cosmoknights is set in its own universe and follows a ragtag band of space g**s trying to beat the patriarchy.

One of my 2024 reading goals is to read more non fiction. To do that I have been listening to Somebody's daughter while cooking my meals this week. I have found over the years that a good memoir written by non celebrities is my jam but sometimes a celebrity memoir can keep me captivated like the ones pictured above by Glennon Doyle and Ali Wong.

What are some of your fave memoirs?

I don't have much new to say about Children Of Blood and Bone that hasn't already been said. It was my last 5 star read of 2023. Despite being very hefty in length causing me to take forever to pick up it was a fast read.

I am not too well read in the Sci Fi and fantasy genre, so an ambitious world building novel is not for me. This is YA fantasy and you are immediately thrown into this new world which is pretty easy to follow. I highly recommend this one to anyone that may be nervous about fantasy and wants to dabble into that genre in 2024.

Happy New Year!

Island of a Thousand Mirrors is a historical fiction novel. It's a heart wrenching and important novel following the lives of two girls during the Sri Lankan civil war. This book is important and an emotionally hard read about a historical event I don't think gets very much attention if any in our western education.

For lovers of low stakes sapphic cozy fantasy, I give you a Legends and Lattes inspired book, Can't Spell Treason Without Tea. 🔮🫖🗡️

Reyna, one of the Queen's private guards, is in a secret relationship with Kianthe, the most powerful mage in existence. This book follows their mishaps and successes as they realize their dream of living together and opening a bookshop that serves tea.

I recommend this one to anyone that needs a hug this holiday season.

Wow. I haven't read a non fiction travel book in a hot minute and was surprised when this became a 5 star.

Blythe quits her job in 2019 and begins a journey through national parks west of the Mississippi River for the summer. This isn't your typical national park memoir. She takes care and writes with a critical lens about the creation of public lands, their current over use and much more.

Come for the nostalgic descriptions of some of your fave places in the US and stay for the perspective of driving through small towns as a woman and seeing anti abortion signs as well as a chapter on Theodore Roosevelt being a racist villain.

I am reading again! Which means new books are going live on the site and my attempts at book reviews are back.

James Baldwin is one of my fave authors and whenever I get to spend time with his writing is time well spent. Despite his novels being written in the 1960-70s, his writing is approachable and covers themes which are sadly still relevant today.

If Beale Street Could Talk reminded me a lot of the book An American Marriage by Tayari Jones. So if you liked that book or it moved you try this one. This book is told through the eyes of Tish a 19 yr old girl in New York who is in love with Fonny, a young sculptor and father of her child. Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to do whatever it takes to clear his name and free him.

Lakota Woman by Mary Crow Dog is a straightforward and powerful autobiography that is emotional but has moments of humor.

This has been a book that has sat on my shelf for years and I am happy I finally picked it up. It took me so long to pick it up because after ready Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, which I loved, but it was deeply sad and moving. It took me awhile to be ready to feel all those things again.

Gifty is a PhD candidate in neuroscience at Stanford. She is studying mice in relation to depression and addiction. Her brother, died of a he**in overdose after an injury hooked him on OxyContin. Her mother is fighting depression and can't get out of bed. gifty is determined to discover the scientific basis for the suffering she sees all around her.

"Transcendent Kingdom is a deeply moving portrait of a family of Ghanian immigrants ravaged by depression and addiction and grief--a novel about faith, science, religion, love. Exquisitely written, emotionally searing, this is an exceptionally powerful follow-up to Gyasi's phenomenal debut."

My only 5 star read of the month. ✨I had been putting off this book for a long time probably due to my mood reading. It's one of those books that I wish I picked up a lot sooner.

Sweet Bean Paste is a short and fast read translated from Japanese. This novel discusses whether our worth is tied to more than our professions or contributions to society.

Tokue, an elderly woman with disfigured hands and a troubled past comes into his life. She makes the best sweet bean paste.
