This has been a book that has sat on my shelf for years and I am happy I finally picked it up. It took me so long to pick it up because after ready Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, which I loved, but it was deeply sad and moving. It took me awhile to be ready to feel all those things again.
Gifty is a PhD candidate in neuroscience at Stanford. She is studying mice in relation to depression and addiction. Her brother, died of a he**in overdose after an injury hooked him on OxyContin. Her mother is fighting depression and can't get out of bed. gifty is determined to discover the scientific basis for the suffering she sees all around her.
"Transcendent Kingdom is a deeply moving portrait of a family of Ghanian immigrants ravaged by depression and addiction and grief--a novel about faith, science, religion, love. Exquisitely written, emotionally searing, this is an exceptionally powerful follow-up to Gyasi's phenomenal debut."
