Fumi is a small shop in Portland, Oregon that offers in-house handmade incense, work by artists, vintage clothing and objects, events, workshops, and more ~

Fumi has made one full journey around the sun! Opening this shop has been a radical experience. No doubt this is a celebratory moment but it is also weighted by the reality of how hard it is to keep a small biz sustainable. As we approach this milestone, we reflect on what helps keep us buoyant.

The regulars who notice small changes in the shop.
The kiddos (and adults!) who leave drawings in our community coloring book.
The number of times folks say, “It smells good in here,” as soon as they walk in.

There are countless lil floaties carrying us into this second year. If Fumi has resonated with you in some way, we hope you’ll join us in honoring our 1-year anniversary!

We get a lot out of wrapping gifts up real cute and what better way than through the art of furoshiki! We’re excited to welcome back Yasuko of okappa houseware to host TWO hands-on furoshiki workshops on Sun Nov 29th! This was the *first* workshop we ever hosted in the Fumi space and it means so much to bring it back. She will be offering two sessions: (1) 5-6p and (2) 6:30-7:30

Furoshiki is the Japanese tradition of wrapping gifts with cloth. In this workshop, you’ll learn simple and beautiful ways to wrap gifts for the season using fabric squares that can be reused.

For centuries in Japan, furoshiki has been a way to wrap, carry, and share gifts with care — a small, beautiful tradition that turns ordinary cloth into something meaningful.

We’ll explore several techniques, including basic wraps, bag wraps, flower knots, bottle wraps, and more — perfect for holiday gifting and everyday use. Tea and cookies will be served.

Please join us for another rendition of Fumi as coffee shop ~ Slow Kissa, Sun Nov 15th, 10-3p ~ brought to life by our dear friends from Slow bar 間 and BOULET . Slow Bar will be serving a kissa style (Japanese coffeeshop) pour over coffee, usucha matcha, and white tea from Spirit tea. Boulet will be offering intentionally paired seasonal snacks. Yum! Come by for some slooowww siiippps and sweet folks ~

A new tape and incense fragrance are now out in the world 🙏🏼 So special to collaborate with our buddy Joshua Limanjaya for this release. A cozzzy evening of sound and scent. Thank you to Joshua for sharing your love and relationship with gamelan music and liner notes. Thank you to the folks who joined us at the shop. As usual, witnessing how the space can be activated in new ways keeps things fun and fresh for us. Thanks for bringing it to life, folks ✨

As the season cools we find it a perfect time to welcome back Salty - Xi Jie Ng - 黄晞竭 to host another Ancestor Dream Circle gathering here at the shop. Join us on Sun Nov 1st (5-7p) for this connective invitation.

Ancestor Dream Circle is an intimate gathering and palliative portal at the intersection of dreams and ancestral connection. We will dive into lineage and ancestral artifacts. Together we will create personal ritual objects that can be used to connect with ancestors known and unknown, and end with a guided meditation-dreaming. Dream tea provided ~
