This is my second year teaching an incense making class here on the island of Awaji at the beautiful former middle school turned creative center, ๐Ÿค Itโ€™s an honor to have the opportunity to teach workshops here in Japan, and on Awaji, no less, an island home to the highest concentration of incense factories in Japan and the source of around 70% of the countryโ€™s incense production. There is no shortage of people here working in this field with knowledge far beyond my own.

At times, this can stir up the circular thinking of my ole friend, impostor syndrome. But my hope is that what I offer feels like a celebration of the ways Japanese craft and culture continue to be carried forward outside of Japan, with deep respect for its history, producers, and living traditions.

I donโ€™t consider myself a traditional maker. Much like my experience of being biracial, I feel more like a hybrid ~ an evolutionary offshoot of the craft. I take this path very seriously, and I find the best way forward is slowly and intentionally: asking questions, reflecting, and remaining open to learning.

Much like my experience last year, I leave feeling inspired ~ with new directions to take, new fragrances to explore, and more to share through Fumi and my workshops. Iโ€™m deeply grateful to the people who helped make this experience possible. My biggest thanks to Taro-san for his integral support in producing these events and for sharing the magic of Awaji and all it has to offer ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ Iโ€™m also so grateful to Mr. Ikegami of the Hyogo Business & Cultural Center for the initial introduction and coordination, and to my friend Kyoko for being the first spark that set all of this in motion ๐Ÿ’œ

Iโ€™m entering the last leg of my trip. I miss the shop, but I can also feel that familiar sadness that comes with leaving a place you love. Iโ€™ll savor it while I can.

Hello from the winding mountain roads of Kochi, Japan ๐Ÿ’š I used to live here in the early 2000s. I worked as an English teacher, a common way to get a visa. Work was just a means to spend time here and more deeply experience life and culture of Japan. My mom is from Tokyo so when she would come to visit me, she had a cultural experience of her own. I ended up living here for 5 years during a very formative time (25-30 yo). Iโ€™ve returned many times since moving away. Kochi is a home place for me. I have a deep love for the landscape, the people, and the delicacies. What I learned here shows up in so much of Fumi. I am endlessly grateful for all the kindness I have been shown here. Cheers to the growth that comes from homes away from home ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผโœจ

Temari sushi are small, hand-shaped sushi balls inspired by traditional Japanese embroidered temari toys, topped with colorful ingredients and designed to be eaten in one or two bites. In this small group workshop you will learn how to make temari sushi, complete with recipe, ingredients and some to take home! Jane will also be making a little somethinโ€™ to share with the group as well. Bring a small cutting board, small knife and your creativity! Link to sign up in bio.

On Sunday May 3rd (4:30-7:30) join returning artist for another round of Sashiko Mending ๐Ÿงต

In this workshop, participants will explore the cultural significance of sashiko and its deep ties to sustainability, Mottainai=Do not waste, use everything. While also engaging in a gentle practice of mendingโ€”both garments and oneself. Through the act of repairing frayed clothing together, participants are invited to reflect on personal experiences of brokenness and to discover new ways of healing through shared creation.

Each participant will learn one of the traditional Sashiko patterns and will make a patch that can be used to repair a torn garment or even as a coaster. This Sashiko cloth becomes more than material; it carries history and, through mending, becomes part of a new story.
