Nature was showing off when it made this one!

Chrysanthemum stone is exactly what it looks like — a dark matrix stone with white crystal formations that bloom outward like a flower frozen in rock. The chrysanthemum pattern forms naturally over millions of years, which is either very patient artistry or geology being dramatic. Probably both.

On the metaphysical side, chrysanthemum stone is associated with harmony, good luck, and helping you stay present — the idea being that something this unhurried has a lot to teach about not rushing. It’s also said to encourage following your dreams, which tracks for a stone that spent millions of years slowly becoming a flower.

This piece is $28 and currently sitting in the shop looking very pleased with itself.

A parliament of owls. A murder of crows. A pack of wolves.

And apparently, what we have here is called a thunder of dragons.

Fitting, honestly. These carved crystal dragon heads have been sitting on our shelf radiating quiet menace and excellent taste. We carry a lot of fantasy books about dragons. The dragons seem aware of this. We’re choosing to see it as a symbiotic relationship.

Carved from fluorite, amethyst, rose quartz, ruby zoisite, sodalite, and more — including some that go full chaotic evil under a black light — these start at $5 for the small ones, which is frankly a very reasonable price for a dragon. The larger ones scale up from there.

Meet Dora, current queen of the vintage section.

Dora came to us last summer as a teenage stray from the Portland Forge — a pretty rough place for a cat, especially one with week-old babies in tow. She was friendlier than the mostly feral crowd out there, so one of the workers did the right thing and brought her to us. She and her kittens got the full Dora the Explorer treatment for names, and a few of her crew — Swiper, Tico, and Backpack — are still hanging around in the rescue.

Dora herself decided cat room life wasn’t for her and appointed herself bookstore cat. Good call, honestly. She’s affectionate with most people, happy to share the couch or claim a lap, and has made her peace with Finley. She does prefer to be the only queen in the room, though, and has made that preference known.

She’s tiny. She is also not remotely aware of this.

A word to the wise: she’s sweet, but she has opinions, and she’s not shy about expressing them if you’re doing something she didn’t approve. Gentle visitors tend to be her favorites. Rowdy kids and sudden movements, less so.

She’s young — probably not even two yet — and looking for the right home. If you think that might be you, applications are open at www.midwestpetrefuge.com/adopt, where you can also browse all of our other available cats.

Everybody needs a house hippo!

We’ve got three looking for homes right now… a big chonky jasper for $30, a medium pyrite for $30 (he’s a heavy boy, forewarning), and a carnelian for $10. The carnelian has a little extra face going on, which honestly just gives him character. We love him. 💜

Stop in today 12 until at least 6 PM.

And a heads up: Saturday we’re hosting chips and trims for the rescue, so the store will be open extended hours — 10 AM to 4 PM. Get your pet’s nails trimmed or get them microchipped to help them get back home if they ever wander off. Then come over to the bookstore and adopt a crystal hippo while you’re at it. 😉
