- late 50s/early 60s Sears Silvertone 618/630 Archtop, made by Kay.
A little story to this guitar. This was a score for my Dad when he was working as a clerk at one of the local pawnshops many moons ago. Part of why he took up that job was so he could acquire gears for me and my musical aspirations. The guitar was very non playable. It was missing a nut. The original bridge was replaced by a bulky makeshift. Both the chrome tailpiece and pickguard were M.I.A. Also, due to its age and non care, the neck was becoming unglued and had to sit with a couple of clarinet reeds as shims underneath. Dad had intended to refurbish this guitar. One of several such projects that were either unfinished or never started as he had fallen ill and eventually passed away. This was the latter.
Since then it’s been collecting dust at my house until 10 months back. A late Sunburst 1920s Gibson made Recording King archtop made its way into my mate Ken’s guitar shop. I had made a post of it if you’re curious to see what I’m talking about. Playing this guitar and the beauty of it lit a fire in me to put the Silvertone back together.
Dropped if off with my buddy Kenneth Ross in March and it was to have been finished by then but 2020 had other plans and I had to wait until this past August for the results. I really love it. It looks beautiful. It’s got a nice warm, resonance sound and it takes to the slide very well. Thx Ken for doing such a bang up job!
