August is Women in Translation month!

It's a great month to check out a book either written or translated by a woman in a language other than English.

Why should you check them out? So glad you asked!

Here at Salmonberry Books, we firmly believe in reading widely and reading diversely. These stories can transport you to a world completely unlike your own, which can teach you something new, develop your empathy and ability to relate to those around you, and just be a dang good time!

We want to live in a vibrant, eclectic, and diverse world, and we want the stories around us to reflect that. This month is a great chance to read something new and help cultivate that world.

Happy reading!

It's a beautiful new book Tuesday, and bookstore pug Rhubarb is here until 3, and she cannot wait to help you pick out a new book. And by "help you," we mean that she will gaze meaningfully into your eyes until your choice of next read becomes clear.

Happy reading!

The next is right around the corner, and you know what that means... lots of late night bookish goodness!

We're thrilled that author will be joining us from 6-9pm, signing copies of her books and chatting about her sci-fi mystery and paranormal romance series. Robin is always a great time, so be sure to swing by and say hi!

And if we have an author signing until 9pm, that does in fact mean we are staying open late on August 22nd! We'll be open and slinging books until 10pm, when the Night Market closes.

So be sure to enjoy one of the best nights in downtown Port Orchard, and come on through to check out the Night Market and Robin Jeffrey!

We interrupt our usual bookish content to announce the soft launch of Rhubarb, the shop dog.

This derp of a potato gremlin will occasionally be in the store and she would love nothing more than to slobber all over you. So if you're into dogs, come and say hi!

Rhubarb won't have a set schedule, but if you're lucky, you'll spot this loaf on your next visit!

Did the Puget Sound Book Festival leave you craving more book fair goodness?

You're in luck! Because next Saturday, August 22nd, is the first South Kitsap Storytellers Summit!

Thanks to a generous grant from the Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation, the South Kitsap School District is hosting a vibrant, district wide K–12 literacy celebration designed to uplift student voices and spark a lifelong love of reading and writing. This event is especially meaningful to us as we work to ensure that all students—particularly those of color—have the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the stories they read and the authors they meet.

Author is the keynote author for the event, and he'll be joined by an absolutely stacked author list!

Come by the event from 10am-3pm for:
- Engagement with local literacy advocates including Kitsap Regional Library, Follett, Salmonberry Books, Eagle Harbor Books, and more
- Connections with community partners like South Kitsap Fire & Rescue, the YMCA, the Olympic Educational Service District, and others
- A festive atmosphere with food trucks, games, and free literacy resources for families

We're honored to be a part of this amazing event, and we can't wait to see you all there.

So be sure to swing by Marcus Whitman Middle School (1887 Madrona Dr SE, Port Orchard, WA 98366) on August 22 for another phenomenal book event in Kitsap!

Yesterday was our 4th time at the Puget Sound Book Festival, and wowzers, y'all showed up! As is often the case, we had too much dang fun at the event, and so we didn't take many pictures, but trust that the best bookish time was had by all.

Huge thanks to for hanging out with us all day! We can confirm that she is as delightful as her books, even after 4 hours in the sun. If you missed her but want signed copies of her books, she graciously signed our leftover stock, so swing on by and grab one.

Big thanks as well to and .co who organize and run this event. Every year is somehow bigger and better than the last!

And of course, thank you to all of the bookstores and book lovers who showed up and made this event so incredible. We are honored to be a part of such a vibrant, lovely, and committed book community. ❤🤯

We hope everyone gets a little rest, lots of hydration, and plenty of time to enjoy the stack of books you snagged at the event, and we can't wait for next year!

We added lots of sparkles and emphasis to this photo because we REALLY want to make sure y'all make it to the Puget Sound Book Festival this Sunday so you can meet Samantha Allen and get your own signed copy of "Puck"!

This is our favorite event of the summer. Oodles of bookstores, bookish makers, authors, food, and PNW sunshine on the water. What could be better!?

We'll see you there!
