Jennifer Bardsley Author joins Reader, I. — White Rabbit Book Co.'s new celebration of PNW romance lit, with a women's-agency bent — as our featured author for the July 18 event — and she's a perfect fit.

She's the public face of PNW small-town sweet romance: author of the Harper Landing series, The History of Us, and Talk of the Town, published with Amazon's Montlake imprint and read in print and audio across the country. She's also an Edmonds local, Stanford grad, and the writer behind I Brake for Moms, which ran weekly in the Everett Herald from 2012 to 2023. Her Facebook reader group, Jennifer Bardsley's Book Sneakers, is an engaged reader community.

Her column and her novels both put women's lives and choices at the center — which is exactly the territory Reader, I. is here for.

More info and authors to come.

A quick follow-up to our recent post about Sinclair Inlet Book Co. closing its storefront.

When we moved from the mall and were no longer "under the stairs," Bookshop Under the Stairs became Sinclair Inlet Book Co. Now that we're no longer associated with the Sinclair Inlet, we're White Rabbit Book Co.

Not a storefront — an online and pop-up bookseller and a curatorial sensibility that travels.

We'll appear at themed events, many of which we'll organize ourselves, and sell curated books there and at whiterabbitbookco.com. We're "a bookstore where you are."

Alice followed the white rabbit down the rabbit hole. Adventure ensued.

Just as the white rabbit didn't build the adventure but only opened the door, we too hope to open doors.

We've been working to create four themed pop-up events spread throughout the year, each for a different community of readers — indie romance lit in summer, Banned Books Week in October, mystery in late winter, speculative fiction in spring. The first event is Reader, I. — a celebration of indie romance lit. Saturday, July 18, 2026, in downtown Port Orchard.

Between events, we are an online and pop-up bookseller. Curated selections, signed pre-orders from event authors, recommendations from someone whose tastes you've come to know if you've visited the shop the past four years.

The nonprofit, now Kitsap Reads, continues alongside, doing the literacy and freedom-to-read work it was always meant to do.

We'd love to have you along. Follow the rabbit.

A final note from Sinclair Inlet Book Co.

When I first considered opening a bookstore, I was hesitant about the need for a second bookstore in Port Orchard. At the time, the only other bookstore here focused on used books, so my plan was to focus on new. The balance made sense, so we opened Bookshop Under the Stairs on National Independent Bookstore Day in 2022.

Within a year after opening, Port Orchard had four bookstores. I never believed the "pie" was big enough for so many slices, but since we were already in business we tried whatever we could to stay open. After some changes in the following years, we're again at four bookstores (and many other places to buy books) in one small town.

Bookshop Under the Stairs (later known as Sinclair Inlet Book Co.) was never set up to be a vendor-based or any other sort of subsidy that many small shops in Port Orchard have (part-time owners, spouses with jobs, etc.). With book sales in town spread so thin, our overhead cannibalized much of our new-book inventory without leaving finances to replace it. A downward spiral we tried many things to reverse.

Now after a little more than four years, we will be ceasing full-time retail operations soon. But I specify "full-time retail operations" because some of the things we've developed along the way will continue.

1. The 501c3 nonprofit Sinclair Inlet Books will continue its mission to "support literacy and literature" through events and other opportunities. The initial hope was that the nonprofit would also acquire the existing bookstore, but without that burden of overhead, Sinclair Inlet Books will be free to pursue its larger intended mission.

2. The bookstore itself is "getting its act together and taking it on the road," so to speak. We're transitioning from full-time retail to online and pop-up bookselling. We'll keep you updated through our Facebook and Instagram posts.

3. Goran and I will continue our own creative endeavors. Goran's art can now be found at goranhodzic.com, and we're looking at getting into galleries and other sales venues. I write speculative literary fiction and short-form essays, so I'll have more time to focus on that at terryheath.com.

I hope this won't be "goodbye." I've enjoyed knowing so many of you — both here and at the shop. If you'd like to stay in touch in some way, here's where:
