Captain T's began in 1985 in downtown Port Angeles as your typical T-shirt shop with iron-on transfers and pre-cut letters and numbers. In December of that year, our harbor suffered a devastating oil spill, prompting the oil company to have need of 1977 t-shirts to give to the volunteers who helped clean birds. Without screenprint equipment, we found a home-based printer and assisted what kept ca
ptain T's from being yet another start-up business statistic. Our first dryer belt was created from a welding curtain. Our location has changed many times over the years. We were on 8th street the year of the big snow and ours was one of the collapsed roofs. We moved to railroad Avenue on the waterfront in 2001. After ten years there, the opportunity to purchase our current building arose and we took on that challenge. After a year of total renovation, we are the proud owners of a 6000+ square foot commercial building in downtown Port Angeles. Originally built in 1931 as the Elwha Theatre, the building now is the home to Captain T's in addition to The Beanery Espresso. The coffee bar and gift shop / show-room enjoy visible street frontage, while the production area occupies the back, A six color and an eight color printer along with a 12 foot conveyor dryer are in use on the east side and a single and double head embroidery machine are kept busy on the west side. In addition, we operate shirt and hat presses, a sublimation printer and a vinyl CAD-cutter. Everything is produced in-house, including graphic design and embroidery digitizing. The local underground tour included our building in 2012. Our private offices are in the balcony of the old theater and a viewing window reveals the original mural on the ceiling. Access to the projector booth is through our offices and the tour sometimes includes the old restrooms in the basement. So, now you know our story and we look forward to seeing you the next time you have a need for our services, a local roast espresso, a souvenir shirt or an update on the remodel.
