Hello Friends!

Olympic Angels has created Pages of Perspective, a community-wide reading initiative designed to spark conversation, deepen understanding, and increase awareness about the lasting impact of foster care. The first selection is 'Wards of the State: The Long Shadow of American Foster Care' by Claudia Rowe (finalist for the National Book Award).

"By the time Maryanne was eighteen years old, she was on trial for murder. In and out of foster homes since the fourth grade, she had been trafficked and assaulted, and as a runaway on the streets, she finally pointed a gun at a man and pulled the trigger. She fled, but with no family and few real friends, it didn't take long for the police to catch up with her.
In court, Maryanne's defense blamed the foster care system itself. While the state of Washington brushed off the argument, journalist Claudia Rowe decided to look closer."

You can visit us at PBN and get pick up a copy of 'Wards of the State'*, read it, and pass it along to another member of our community. We are one of several locations you can pick up a copy.

On August 8, 2026, the organizers of the initiative, Olympic Angels, will host a special author talk and community discussion panel in Sequim.
Author Claudia Rowe, alongside local voices with lived and professional experience in foster care, will share stories, insights, and perspectives on the impact of foster care in our community.

Who are Olympic Angels? They mobilize community members to support one of our most vulnerable populations – children experiencing foster care. Through their Love Box and Dare to Dream programs, approximately 160 volunteers support 25 families and 75 children and youth on the Olympic Peninsula.

Hello Friends!

Tuesday finds us once again with a fabulous selection of new releases!

Special mention this week goes to 'Night Objects' by P.A. local Eli Raphael — out today from Grand Central Publishing, going home with neighbors who didn't want to wait.

Set right here in Port Angeles and on the Washington coast, 'Night Objects' is the debut from a writer Liz Moore ('God of the Woods') calls "a writer to watch" and who happens to have been a Port Angeles resident for fifteen years. In the Seattle Times, Jackie Verriano said she "fell in love" with the 'Night Objects': "It’s not just the intriguing plot — a dark academia murder mystery combined with a coming-of-age tale — it’s the way Raphael’s words chew up the scenery she sets."

This Friday, we get to be her hometown launch.

Eli will be in conversation with Port Townsend novelist Adrianne Harun ('A Man Came Out of a Door in the Mountain'), with audience Q&A and a signing to follow.

Friday, May 29 · 6:30–8:00 PM Carver Room
Port Angeles Library
2210 South Peabody
Port Angeles, WA 98362

The event is free and open to the public, with books for sale and signing.
