Fifty years in, the part we are proudest of is what people tell us once they can hear clearly again. Here is one we wanted to share.

“I had hearing tests before, but I felt like they made the hearing test more comfortable for me. Rod gave me a lot of feedback and information that the previous provider did not. I just felt really comfortable, and he was very good at explaining everything.” — Tammy

Hearing help has come a long way over the centuries.

In the 1600s, people used ear trumpets, simple curved horns designed to funnel sound into the ear. By the 1920s, hearing aids used vacuum tubes and could weigh as much as seven pounds. The invention of the transistor in 1948 made devices small enough to wear comfortably, and in 1996, the first fully digital hearing aids changed everything.

Over our 50 years, we’ve witnessed an incredible transformation, from bulky devices that were nearly impossible to hide to today’s tiny, rechargeable hearing aids that can stream calls, music, and more directly from your smartphone.

We’ve saved a few pieces of hearing history along the way. Swipe through to see just how far hearing technology has come.

A quick bit of ear science for you.

Deep inside your ear are thousands of tiny hair cells that turn sound into signals your brain can understand. Here is the catch. Unlike most cells in your body, these do not grow back once they are damaged. That is why protecting your hearing matters so much, and why catching changes early makes such a difference. And one more thing that surprises people, you do not really hear with your ears, you hear with your brain. The ears just gather the sound and pass it along.

This Father’s Day, I am thinking about my dad. Fifty years ago, Allen Reese opened this practice and spent his career helping people in Plymouth hear better. Today my husband Rod and I have the honor of carrying it forward, running the place he built with his name still over the door. That is not something I take for granted. To my dad, and to every father who built something for the people he loves, happy Father’s Day.

Love, Beth

June is Men's Health Month, and the men in our lives are famous for one thing at the doctor, putting it off. Hearing is a good example. Plenty of men notice they are turning the TV up or missing parts of conversations long before they ever say a word about it. Only about one in five people who could benefit from treatment actually go and get it. A hearing check is quick and painless, and it is an easy thing to finally cross off the list.

If there is a guy in your life who keeps saying "what?" maybe nudge him our way.

Picture a hearing aid.
What comes to mind? Something big, beige, and bulky?
Swipe.

The hearing aid in the first photo is what hearing technology looks like today. Small, sleek, and packed with features.

The hearing aid in the next photo shows where we started. It was considered advanced technology in its day, but hearing aids have come a long way since then.

Many of today’s devices recharge overnight like your phone and can stream calls, music, and more directly to your ears.

The ReSound Vivia is a great example of how far hearing technology has come.
If your idea of hearing aids is still stuck in the past, a quick swipe might change your mind.

What is a sound you would never want to miss?

Maybe it is a grandchild laughing, your favorite song on the radio, rain on the roof, or someone special saying your name. We love the reminder of why this work matters, and after 50 years, those little everyday sounds are still the whole point so…

Ever feel like you can hear people just fine, they are just mumbling? You are not imagining it, and you are not alone. Hearing loss often is not about volume at all. It is about clarity. The higher pitched sounds tend to fade first, and those are the consonants like a hard g, s, f, sh, and k that carry most of the meaning in a word. The vowels that carry the loudness still come through, so things sound loud enough but not quite clear. That is why a quiet room feels easy and a busy restaurant feels impossible. If this sounds familiar, it is worth getting checked.
