Get • .source Did you know that tv remote controls used to be considered cutting edge consumer technology? Nowadays we hardly give them a second thought and expect it to come with a tv, but in the 70s companies made commercials just to promote the remote control, and a wireless remote was a big deal.

Early remotes were bulky and limited in functionality. But one notable innovation was the Zenith Space Command remote from 1972, which used a mechanical system that produced ultrasonic sound waves to transmit signals to compatible tv sets. Which allowed it to function without the need for batteries and unlike other old remotes it didn’t require pointing it directly at the set.
