39 years ago, it was a cold and bleak day in Port Huron, Michigan. It was also the last day of operations for the Port Huron and Detroit Railroad. In this image, the 60 is about to cross M29 and switch Diamond Crystal for the last time - pulling 5 loads and spotting 4 empties. Chrysler and Prestolite would be worked on the trip north. Morton Salt didn't get a switch that day.

With the exception of one gentleman photographing the train on the wye by the office, I don't know that anyone else was photographing that day. I didn't see anyone else in St. Clair, and the light was gone by the time they finished here. This may be one of the last images of the PH&D.

I have been told that the Alcos were used by the C&O for a period of time, so while it might have looked like the PH&D after this day, it wasn't the PH&D...

I looked at Google Earth as I was creating this post. With the exception Diamond Crystal in the far background, the buildings at left are gone, as is the former station to the right of the 60. The yard is gone as well, just two tracks remain and there's a "new" parking lot for the boat docks.
Sic transit gloria.

This image appears on page 107 of my book The Port Huron and Detroit Railroad in Black and White, 1984. If you'd like more information about the book, please go to https://www.laughingfrogimages.com/books

Yes, I’m still here…. This one is from on this day in 2008. There’s nothing like looking at Pittsburgh from the top of the Duquesne Incline at the end of the day with a rainbow…. Shot with an advanced for the time Casio EX-V8.

I haven’t posted anything for half of forever, so might as well make this a good one. 43 years ago today, I was standing on Western Maryland’s (abandoned) Salisbury Viaduct photographing a Pittsburgh Transportation Museum Society excursion from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD. WM F7As 7165 and 7173 led the train of cars from the PTMS, Chessie Steam Special and PATrain. There’s a highway bridge blocking this shot now, and it’s a fairly safe bet that everything that was on the rails that day is gone. . Canon AE-1, 50mm f1.8, Kodachrome64.

One of the highlights of my time at York was a Class 60 in great light. It was just my second opportunity to photograph a 60. DB Cargo 60044 approaches the train shed pulling a train of empty flat cars. As I’ve learned more about the 60s, it seems like they were/are an “almost” success - they are apparently great pullers, but have never been without their issues. Perhaps reminiscent of Alco’s C-636 here in the US? 10/2021.

“Coming in under the wires”. A Transpennine Express IEP train set glides in to Platform 3 at York. I really enjoyed working with the arches, curves and lighting at York. The volume and variety of trains was nothing to complain about either, at least not to this Yank.

“Eras Meet”. DB Cargo (EWS) Class 66 66093 yards a cement train in Didcot. The drivers of a steam locomotive from days long passed forms the foreground, while contemporary catenary supports cap off the scene. The 66s aren’t the new kids on the block anymore. They’re proverbially and visually in the middle here.

Freightliner Class 66 66620 heads east with a loaded cement train as a Great Western Class 387 DMU lays over in the background. Had a nice angle. Would have liked some sun, but when in Didcot, you shoot what is before you. 2021/09
