My background was originally in woodworking and construction. Through my formative years I was able to really learn the art and mechanics of building and repair. I owe so much of what I do to my father of blessed memory and my big brother to developing me into an independent thinker and observer of whatever I was working on.
In my mid 20’s, after getting involved as a salesman at a local music shop, I turned my attention to instrument repair. I was so intrigued by the on-staff guitar tech who would fearlessly refret a guitar, open up electronic cavities and rebuild someone’s tone circuit from scratch, repair cracked tops and broken headstocks…. It was pure magic to me.
I started by doing what I coined as “guerrilla repairs” just to make a sale. Someone always wanted to buy their guitar brand new from an unopened box…. And more often than not, the setup was complete trash. Super high action, tremolo out of wack or the opposite, crazy low buzzy action. So I started by turning screws and truss rods just to make a deal happen. Little by little I developed the eye, ear, and feel that gave me the confidence to take it to another level… electronics. Simple pickup swaps turned into full rewires. There was no going back!
In 2008 I decided to offer up my services by posting ads of Craigslist. Thinking that it would be a decent side hustle, I quickly learned that I was in a niche profession and that my skills could actually set me on a career course.
The story of how Savior Guitar started is a crazy story by its self. And I look forward to sharing that in a separate post. You won’t want to miss that!
