When the old and new meet. The story is missing some links but this old artwork, brought from over-seas years ago, needed to be put back on the wall. The design work that was on the mat became part of the art which needed to be preserved. Lay a new mat on top, add conservation glass and a frame that fits the era and it's ready to cause some conversation. Maybe the rest of the story will be uncovered.

They went for the gold... and got it!
I'm long overdue for posting some of the projects and stories that have come into the shop in a box and went out to hang on a wall in a more prominent place. They are sure to generate attention and conversation, as they should. One of Christian Laettner's stories will sure to get some attention on the wall of the Paul Nelson Farm hunting lodge!

A client brought in some artwork from her travels that I had never seen before. "Banyan leaf vein painting" is an elegant artwork with an ancient cultural history. It is popular in China, Japan, India and Vietnam. This pure hand-made work of art involves a complicated process. And, for me, it involved a challenge in the framing process but it looks great on her wall and causes good conversation I bet!

It's been too long since adding an update so I'll post my most recent project. My design strategy for this Sarah Rogers giclee` print, titled "Foster", was to keep it simple. I didn't want distractions in mat design or frame. The artwork is the center attraction; the framing is meant to compliment. Adding museum grade glass enhances clarity and dimension as well as preservation. Enough said, I think Foster is listening!

Sometimes the story is simple. The composition and the colors are enough to catch the eye and stimulate the curiosity. The mat and frame just add a finishing touch.

A new client who found my contact info on FB was a reminder that I haven't posted an update for quite some time. So, here's an example of putting some special artifacts from the past into a frame for enjoyment today -- and tomorrow. A grandfather's repair shop from long ago in the SD Badlands yields a wrench with his engraved initials along with a post card advertising his services. Imagine the stories...

She wasn't much on wearing jewelry but what she had was special to her. Each ring had its story -- high school graduation, marriage, and birthstones, limited by her small ring size, that numbered most of her children. Preserving memories and connections from the past.

It's hunting season! When a local lodge brings in a special set of artist proofs and prefers to have them hanging on their walls instead of stored away in the box, you have an obligation to preserve and present them with the quality and care that they deserve. These bird dogs were the result of the artist depicting each of them in their own individual personalities. The deckled edges of the paper, floated above the mat, became a purposeful element in the presentation. Happy hunting!
