Today is a Two Orchid Day! Here are two of my all time favorites.

The first is the wonderful little Epidendrum orchid. This little flower is both diverse and very fragrant (depending on the time of day). A native of Central and South America it can be found living on trees (with a number of other plants and animals). It loves warm humid air and indirect sunlight. Colors range from reds and oranges to greens and even purples. The smell is honey like with slight spicy notes. Because of all of the sugar that this plant produces it is also very popular with insects and even a few mammals. It makes great corsages and looks wonderful in bouquets and arrangements. It is also popular amongst collectors.
Orchid number 2 is the Zygopetalum. Another native of the low to mid regions of South America this remarkable little orchid is also exceptionally fragrant. It smells like hyacinths (though not as intense) and can be intoxicating at first sniff (you want to sniff it more and more). There are many hybrids now, though most tend to have a color theme of green and purple. This orchid is another one that looks unique and lovely in corsages and bouquets as well as a favorite amongst orchid lovers.

Flower of the Day!
The Marigold.
Not only is this the official flower of October, but it is also one of the most revered flowers in the world. It is sacred in cultures from Hinduism to the Aztecs and even Christianity. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years (at least since ancient Greece) the world over. The marigold is edible making foods such as salads a little brighter, and is delicious in tea. It has been used as a dye for clothing. It even has anti-fungal properties. It keeps certain pests away from your garden. And of course it smells good and is really quite lovely. Marigolds look great in bouquets and centerpieces and of course patio pots and window boxes.

Flower of The Day!

Oncidium Orchid - Sharry Baby
Ocidium Orchids are a wonderful addition to any arrangement or bouquet. These little darlings originate in South and Central America and the Caribbean. Sharry Baby is a ruddy brown color with a pinkish lip. The color is lovely, but what really makes this dainty orchid wonderful is the fragrance. It smells like chocolate covered cherries with just a touch of vanilla. Smell one and you will be a convert. A great many oncids have unique and wonderful scents, but this one is a classic. It is also great as a unique house plant. Next time you see one, give it a sniff.

Flower of the Day - Jacaranda Rose
Jacaranda Rose. Wonderfully pink with just a note of purple. Opens with a perfect curl to the petals giving this rose a gorgeous shape which contributes to the overall design. Medium sized, glowing and lovely. Not mention it has that divine classic rose fragrance. It catches the eye and the nose! It can soften or brighten up an arrangement depending on it's placement. What a rose, what a rose, what a rose. Not too many thorns.
