Another fun project done! This customer had a really big power supply. I had to make a shelf for it, and create holes for the fan and AC power. And I only had pictures to take off from. But I nailed it. 1/2" riser included. Fun fun!

Good morning! With a few fret jobs coming my way lately, the big projects have been on hold. But an even bigger project has been the shop itself! AGF 2.0 is live! More lights, power distribution, a small CNC machine, a bench converted to router table, casters on benches so they stay out of the way with tools mounted. New wood box made, etc! All together about a month worth of work. Organizing drawers and bins is all that's really left.

The last 4 years I've been gear-nerding badly. And while my pedal collection is nearing it's completion (HA!) I thought I'd update my design ideas and practice some color schemes upon my own boards. I can surely make one for you. I can make these to any rectangular dimensions your layout requires.

This first project "back" has left indelible marks on my shop, and my outlook on this venture. I needed this SO bad. It's a huge victory, and a job well done. The shop has new tools as a result, and I have found the fun in this instead of the work. As hinted, there's already more in the works. There's 4 other projects I started ages ago, but they give me a great place to start.

Good morning! So I've had a client come through who did not appreciate the lime green on his BC Rich Gunslinger. So after discovering the body blank was 4-piece alder, I then had to account for one of those pieces being much darker than the other three. We kicked around ideas, like adding a top to it, but ultimately the cost effective solutions involved whatever stain I had in stock, and a clear coat over that. We chose a 50/50 blend of Dura Seal Mesquite Red, and natural. Sorry my photo logs on this aren't more complete, but long story continued, I water-popped 3/4 of the guitar body to have the stain take darker, compensating for that one dark piece. Of course the clencher is that their (BC Rich) filler on the knot doesn't take stain. But still, I felt I pulled it off. I also pulled a bit of my HAIR OUT after 6-8 hours of leveling epoxy pore-fill and clear-coat over stain. But I learned a lot about that on this project, and future guitars won't be such a bother. My customer wanted a matte finish this time. I'm not disappointed to avoid polishing. The "dead flat" was the more dull of the two products shown. Wired a new pickup in it for him he bought, no extra since I had it all apart anyway. Considering alder doesn't take stain well to begin with, this came off pretty god indeed.

Quick update on the Syzygy DR1. Shielding paint is in the cavities. Still needs a battery box routed in, Bridge posts, final polish, and off to Matt at Red Button to install the Sustainiac and hand-wound pickups. All controls. The neck is getting it's finish coats, and will also be ready for polish soon. This project is getting very close to done in the next month.

I can't believe this Facebook memory is 9 years old. But that said, it means that this design has held up quite well through guitars constantly sitting in it, being pulled in and out of it, and 2 moves, 1 of them from CO to AZ. Can we make YOU one? This one was special with walnut and red oak alternating in spots. $225 for one just like it. This model has NO mechanical fastening of any kind, and is straight glue and joinery only. Single timber model $200. A redesigned model with screws and pocket holes is coming. Price to be determined, but I'm trying to create less expensive product lines too, and am leaning toward $90-$100.

The Syzygy DR-1 continues. The first body was basswood in the previous post. That wood went from the winters of Colorado, to the summers of Arizona, to the humidity of Florida (customer desired paint job) and folded like a taco, so I'm told, as it never got back to me in shipping. So I had to start over. The neck is still fine. But the body is now alder with a curly maple top. I'm doing my first burst on this one (there are many firsts for me on this build). It's gone well! I'll get posting more consistent to talk about each step with these photos, but for this post I'll just dump a few.

Sometimes you have to make a thing to make a thing. Meet the plate joining jig! Now every top will come through this jig, making my life easier. I've been wanting to build this thing for years.

The new guitar has a model name of "Syzygy DR-1". The following pics include most every phase of the build so far, including neck blank lamination, installing the neck mounting hardware, and even Matt of Red Button Magnetics winding the custom pickups. There will be more pics very soon of the neck blank having been carved.
