He walked into a crowded university meeting, unaware that he would never walk back out.

Within minutes, gunfire would turn a place of learning into a scene of tragedy.

Los Angeles, California.

Bunchy Carter was 26 years old.

In January 1969, the Black Panther Party suffered one of its most devastating losses.

Born Alprentice “Bunchy” Carter in Los Angeles in 1942, he grew up in the city’s streets before spending several years in prison as a young man.

While incarcerated, he transformed his life through reading and political education. After his release, he joined the Black Panther Party and quickly became the leader of its Southern California chapter.

Carter dedicated himself to organizing Black communities, promoting education, and challenging police brutality. His leadership helped expand the Panthers’ influence throughout Los Angeles during one of the most turbulent periods in American history.

But tensions between Black student organizations had been rising on college campuses.

On January 17, 1969, Carter attended a meeting at Campbell Hall on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles. The gathering, organized to discuss the future of a new Black Studies program, brought together members of several organizations.

Without warning, an argument erupted into gunfire.

Bunchy Carter and fellow Black Panther John Huggins were both shot and killed inside the building.

Their deaths shocked supporters across the country and became one of the defining tragedies in the history of the Black Panther Party.

Though he lived only 26 years, Bunchy Carter left a lasting mark on the struggle for Black empowerment and community organizing.

His footsteps ended inside that meeting hall, but the movement he helped build continued long after the echoes of the gunfire faded.

Bunchy Carter.

GR GR Fam. First and foremost thank you to all our supporters for the love that you continually show us. We’ve made history together in this valley and look forward to making much more. We’ve been building and grinding for 7 years to make this dream a reality and it’s an indescribable feeling to see what it has become. As we prepare for Black August and also work on opening The ARC (Archwood Resource Collaborative) next door, the team will be taking a few days off to rest, reset, and reconnect to the source of our mission so We’ll be closed this Wednesday thru Friday. We appreciate you understanding our need for this downtime and look forward to welcoming everyone back into the space on 8/1. We’ll be open today thru Tuesday so come stock up before the break!
