Learning stairs as an above-knee amputee is a step-by-step process.

It starts with building balance, strength, and confidence, then progresses to weight shifting, stair safety, and using handrails. Most learn a “step-to” pattern first before advancing to alternating steps when appropriate.

With practice, proper training, and the right prosthetic support, stairs become another skill to master.

Our clients' strength inspires us every day! Meet Jett, a resilient 19-year-old living with limb loss:

“Just over two years ago, I was in a tragic car accident while driving home from a snowboarding trip. Over the last two years, I’ve been learning how to adapt and continue living life to the fullest. Last winter, I was finally able to get back on the mountain and go snowboarding again with some friends. It felt amazing to be out there again, and I’m looking forward to getting back out next winter.”

My name is Steven Arm at Pongratz, I serve as a Patient Liaison, Orthotic Fitter, and Marketing team member, helping individuals adapt and thrive with prosthetics. My work is deeply personal after losing my limb due to a workplace accident. I understand the physical and emotional journey our patients face.

I’m 29 and I’ve been an amputee for one and a half years I am committed to showing that life doesn’t stop after limb loss. Whether I’m hiking, working out, or photographing snakes in the wild, I believe in staying active and embracing every challenge. I strive to be a resource, motivator, and proof that resilience can lead to a fulfilling, adventurous life.
