Please join the Philly Tenants Union for their next monthly Eviction Defense workshop on Saturday, June 20th at 2pm here at Wooden Shoe (704 South St Philly).
Every 3rd Saturday of the month we convene to talk about different strategies to protect ourselves and our communities from displacement.
We will go over the legal and illegal methods landlords use to displace our neighbors so we can plan how to effectively defend our communities from predatory evictions.
WE KEEP US SAFE!

Accessibility info: the Wooden Shoe is ADA compliant EXCEPT FOR the bathroom (which is public) and the basement. Bathroom is narrow and stairs downstairs have no railing.

The Shoe collective has, rather improbably, existed for fifty years this fall.

It’s always cool to meet and hear from the many, many people who got us here through the years.

If that’s you, however brief or long ago it may have been, we’d like to hear from you as we piece together a simple quotes-based “shoe yearbook” zine to reflect and connect.

You can send in anything, or ask to chat in-person if you’d rather keep your words offline.

Some ideas:

- Do you have a favorite memory of staffing or being a part of the shoe?

- Why did you join the shoe?

- What was an initiative that was going on or you helped with during your time at the shoe?

- Do you remember any specific interactions with visitors or others regarding the shoe that made their mark?

- What impact did participating in the shoe end up having on you?

- Do you have any pictures or artifacts from your time at the shoe you’d be willing to share? (Faces will not be published.)

- What was going on in the country/world at the time that we were grappling with as anarchists?

You may remain anonymous in the zine or give us permission to attribute to a name of your choosing.

ID: semi-transparent background picture of our turquoise zine shelves with following pink text centered large under our circular logo featuring a sabot and black flag as a sailboat with a a person reading a book:

Please join us on Saturday, August 29th at 2pm to find out more about how you can be a penpal with our fellow LGBTQIA+ community members currently experiencing imprisonment by the state, and make connections with your local q***r abolitionist community here in Philly.

We’ll explain how the program through Prisoner Correspondence Proj. works so you have all the information you need before deciding to commit to a penpal, and then we’ll collectively decide on when to meet regularly to support one another in our correspondence journeys!

Future regular meetings will also feature specific political prisoners you can write one-time letters to if you do not have the ability to commit to a long-term penpal at this time, or would like to participate but are not q***r. If you would like to contribute to supporting this part of the effort, please come to the interest meeting, too! All are welcome.

The Wooden Shoe will provide letter-writing and postage materials - you do not need funds to participate! Masks are also required and provided for meetings. They will be held downstairs.

Hope to see you there!

“TO BE HONEST, THAT FIRST LETTER SAVED MY LIFE. HERE LOCKED AWAY, THE WALLS CAN STEAL YOUR LIFE FROM YOU AS YOU FEEL FORGOTTEN, LOST, TO HAVE THIS CONNECTION TO THE OUTSIDE WAS LIKE BRINGING A SPARK OF LIFE BACK TO ME. “
