Mastering the Vernier Caliper: Precision Measurement for Cyclists.
Presented by Beth Permenter, Youth Program Manager at in Arlington, VA
Sunday March 15th, 12:00 PM
Bicycles are machines of incredibly tight tolerances, where a fraction of a millimeter is often the difference between a perfect fit and a ruined component. Whether you are upgrading your handlebars, replacing a mystery seatpost, or sourcing new cartridge bearings, “eyeballing” the size just doesn’t cut it. A Vernier caliper is the ultimate problem-solver for these occasions, but its sliding jaws and unmarked lines can look intimidating to the uninitiated.
This applied workshop demystifies this fundamental tool, showing you how to accurately measure inside and outside diameters and depths of common bicycle parts. We will break down exactly how to read both the main and Vernier scales with confidence, making sure you never order the wrong-sized part again. You don’t need to be a professional frame builder or a math whiz to participate. Home mechanics and beginners are highly encouraged!
A hands-on session measuring common bicycle components (seatposts, bearings, and bolts). Participate or observe. Please bring your own calipers if you have them. (We will have practice calipers available as well.)
