I just wanted to extend a HUGE thank you to all my customers who trust me with cleaning and pressing your comics. Lately, CGC has been up to its old tricks. Ive been getting back a ton of comics with warped inner wells causing all sorts of damage and just plain looking like crap. Almost 40 in my last couple of batches. I am halting all submissions at this point. Ill still clean and press, but I cant hand a customer back their comic looking like crap and them thinking its my fault. CGC Comics Do Better! . Thanks to the people like Swagglehaus who helped this issue get some sunlight but now that CGC is censoring their message boards from this issue, the issue still remains unseen by most.
What Is "Banana Gate"?
"Banana Gate" refers to a defect in CGC's encapsulation process, particularly affecting thinner comic books. The inner plastic wells designed to hold these comics were reportedly too pliable, leading to a curvature that bends the comic within the slab. Collectors have reported that this bending has caused physical damage, such as spine ticks and creases, which were not present before encapsulation .

CGC's Response
Initially, CGC acknowledged the issue, attributing it to a batch of faulty inner wells that were subsequently removed from production. However, as reports persisted, CGC maintained that the bending was within acceptable specifications and did not cause damage. They stated that the curvature did not affect the comic's grade and was not considered a mechanical error requiring reholdering. To address concerns, CGC began using a larger inner well size for thinner books, which reportedly mitigated the issue .
Ongoing Concerns
Despite these measures, collectors have continued to report instances of the "banana" effect in newly graded comics, even into 2025. Some have noted that while the severity of the curvature has lessened, the problem persists . Additionally, discussions about "Banana Gate" have been heavily moderated or removed from CGC's official forums, leading to frustration within the collecting community .
What Should Collectors Do?
If you're concerned about this issue:
Inspect Slabs Carefully: Examine your CGC slabs for any signs of curvature or damage.
Document Issues: Take photographs of any defects and compare them to pre-grading images if available.
Contact CGC: Reach out to CGC's customer service to report any problems and inquire about possible resolutions.
Consider Alternatives: Some collectors are opting for other grading services, such as CBCS, which have not reported similar issues.
While CGC has taken steps to address the problem, the persistence of reports suggests that collectors should remain vigilant and informed when submitting comics for grading.
