Join interdisciplinary artist Michelle Lopez, on Sunday, September 29, from 2 - 3:30 pm, for the next iteration of “Dear Reader,” as she leads a conversation on Ken Lum’s Commodities reading list and its connection to his work.

“Dear Reader” is a programmatic series that follows the model of an informal book club to delve into Ulises’s reading lists through facilitated workshops, lectures, performances, and screenings.

Michelle Lopez (), a sculptor and installation artist, is known for her inventive use of industrial materials to challenge cultural tropes and critique societal structures. Her recent work, WHEN UNDER ONE SKY, installed at Ray Philly (), reflects on collective healing through text-based public art.

Join us Thursday, September 26, from 6-7:30pm for “Landscape Techne: A Book Launch & Discussion,” featuring a discussion with artist Kristen Neville Taylor (), Ulises co-founder Ricky Yanas (), and author Philip Glahn! The conversation will explore the intersections of art, technology, and the environment, and the possibilities that arise when artists and activists engage with histories of progress, production, and utopia.

They’ll explore the recently published “The Future Is Present,” a fascinating book by Philip Glahn and Cary Levine, chronicling the visionary and under-studied LA-based art group Mobile Image, founded by Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz in 1977. The collective appropriated emerging technologies to challenge fundamental conventions of the public sphere, democracy, communication, and political participation, as well as notions of power, representation, and identity.

This fall, as part of “Ulises: Assembly” , we’ve organized three workshops. Nontsikelelo Mutiti (), Director of Graduate Studies for Graphic Design at Yale School of Art is kicking off the series. She will lead a book conception workshop this Friday, September 6 from 12-2pm.

Mutiti is a Zimbabwean-born visual artist and educator. She is invested in elevating the work and practices of Black peoples past, present, and future through a conceptual approach to design, publishing, archiving practices, and institution building.

Much of Mutiti’s printed work exists in multiples — from booklets and print runs of posters to zines and pin-back buttons. She is committed to public engagement and works to create environments that encourage the exchange of experiences. As long-time fans of Mutiti’s practice we’re thrilled to hear her address the work of and the why of a book.

Join artist Kameelah Janan Rasheed , for a 2-PART Game Day on Saturday, August 24.

PART 1: “Design” – Writing and Mark-Making, 2 – 4pm
The day’s first program will focus on designing a series of writing and mark-making prompts. Rasheed explains, “We will take inspiration from the Dadaists, OuLiPians, FLUXUS, and childhood language games. Once we have some context, all participants will be provided with the support and resources to design one prompt/game to be played later in the day. We will end the session by making a 1-sheet book so that participants will have descriptions of other prompts to take home.”

PART 2: “Play” – Game Night, 6 – 8pm
The second workshop will be a game night modeled from the ones Rasheed experienced as a child. Participants are welcome to have snacks and socialize alongside playing games and responding to prompts designed by Rasheed and participants from the earlier workshop.

Participants are encouraged to sign up for both sessions, but it is not required. Links in bio to RSVP. If 16+ and if younger, please arrive with a guardian.

Kameelah Janan Rasheed’s project and exhibition, “— the soft technology of your poems split — s My body into 18: secreting,100 Stanzas ——— That Bow TOWARD no moons,” has been on view in Studio 105 , and will be closing on August 25, 2024. This weekend is you last chance to see and engage with her work.

Ken Lum’s exhibition “Klump!”—the second installment of Ulises’s year-long, three-part artists’ multiples series “Commodities”—opens on August 30, 2024, at Studio 105 . Join us for the opening reception from 6 – 9pm! RSVP at link in bio

“This installation merges and contrasts two opposing artistic impulses. The white exhibition walls symbolize an endpoint in art—an uninflected surface that rejects reference and representation, aiming for a pure aesthetic experience. Small portraits of individuals punctuate the walls like musical notes, adding rhythm to the space.”

The work is part of a series featuring full-figure photographic portraits accompanied by text in the form of questions, such as, “How long has he been here?” or “Is she happy?” “Klump!” showcases recent photos Lum has taken with his phone while walking around Philadelphia and New York, updating his 1985 “World Portrait Series.”

Additionally, has reimagined his iconic “Melly Shum Hates Her Job” billboard as a mug, referencing 9-to-5 office culture and inviting reflection on broader themes of labor, capitalism, and the feeling of being trapped in one’s life, as one sips.

Ken Lum is a Philadephia-based artist exploring themes of identity, immigration, language, and spatial politics through diverse media including painting, sculpture, performance, photography, and writing. His work has been widely exhibited internationally since the 1970s, including at the Whitney Biennial, the Venice Biennale, and the Hirshhorn Museum, with pieces in numerous public collections worldwide.

Join us on Friday August 16th from 6 – 7:30pm for an iteration of “Dear Reader.” It will be a fun and intimate event of collective bookmaking using Kameelah Janan Rasheed’s Algorithmic Book Composition (A-B-C) - Kit, produced as part of the Ulises artists’ multiples series, Commodities.

In the kit, participants will find several “algorithm determiners” such as a die, color wheels, and sides of jenga blocks, used to create a randomized output. Drawing on the history of Black performance and Fluxus scores, A-B-C offers participants a series of algorithms to determine the design, form, content, and distribution of their book composition. ’s selection of publications within the exhibition’s reading room will also support the bookmaking process.

“Dear Reader” is a programmatic series that follows the model of an informal book club to delve into project/exhibition reading lists through facilitated workshops, lectures, performances, and screenings. Event will be in Studio 105 . Link in bio to RSVP.

Meet Ulises Summer Intern Priya Bhavikatti! Priya is a rising junior at the University of Pennsylvania, studying Economics, Neuroscience, and Visual Studies. She enjoys exploring the intersections of business, biology, and art, analyzing what we are biologically attracted to and how it translates into marketing and economic practices.

We’re thrilled to have someone with an eye for numbers and trends working with us as a Marketing & Finance Research Assistant. .bhavikatti has been diving into marketing audits, using analytics to create smart strategies that balance our goals and capacity while pushing us to grow. She’s also analyzing our peers and trends, suggesting new ideas for content. Keep an eye out as we strive to better communicate with you.

Along with interning for Ulises, Priya is working on two other research projects with UPenn professors Kaitlin Pomerantz and David Lydon-Staley. She integrates sustainability into a Communications course to cover the impact of climate change on adolescent emotional development, identifying and synthesizing empirical studies and theoretical frameworks related to pro-climate behaviors and behavior change theory. Additionally, she enhances the MATTERS course curriculum by synthesizing sustainability research to integrate practical, eco-conscious material applications in alternative photography processing, including making pinhole cameras, anthotypes, and cyanotypes.

Her top three books in the shop thus far have been: “I Would Do Anything For Love” by Al Bedell, “Instructional Photography” by Carmen Winant, and “Inhabiting the Negative Space” by Jenny Odell. Ulises is moving to a new location, which will integrate exhibitions, programming, and publications, presenting new offerings and incubating long-term initiatives that will open up opportunities for artists and publishing communities at a larger scale—a space gathered for publishing, ideas, and connection.

Inaugurating Ulises’s new location and kicking off our artists’ multiples series, “Commodities” in Studio 105 , is a project by artist Kameelah Janan Rasheed , “— the soft technology of your poems split — s My body into 18: secreting,100 Stanzas ——— That Bow TOWARD no moons.” A self-described “learner,” Rasheed grapples with the poetics-pleasures-politics of Black knowledge production, information technologies, and modes of [un]learning. Rasheed’s exhibition will focus on the erotics of play during the reading, writing, and publishing processes.

Join us for the opening celebration on Friday, May 3, 6-9 PM, and then again for a program, “Come Play,” on Saturday, May 4, 5-7 PM. In this hybrid lecture-workshop-playtime event, Rasheed will offer autobiographical notes to contextualize the lineages of play that influence her practice.

Winner of the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming and Philadelphia magazine’s “Best of Philly” award, Ars Nova Workshop (ANW) is an internationally recognized jazz, experimental, and new classical music presenter. As Philadelphia’s premier presenter of improvisational music, we are the pivot point between this city and the wide world of jazz and improvisation. We assure Philadelphia audiences a sustained relationship with the most creative work being done in music, and we also ensure that Philadelphia artists are part of that exciting global conversation.

Milford Graves: A Mind- Body Deal:
Milford Graves was a revelatory force in music beginning in the mid-1960s, liberating the drummer from the role of time-keeper to instrumental improviser. A pivotal figure in the free jazz movement, he created groundbreaking work with Albert Ayler, the New York Art Quartet, Min Tanaka, and John Zorn, and led the way in artistic self-production. But his kaleidoscopic genius was not bound by music, and it led him to develop an oeuvre unprecedented in its breadth— This fully illustrated catalog includes documentation from the exhibition A Mind-Body Deal, with hand-painted album covers and posters, idiosyncratic drum sets, recording ephemera, multimedia sculptures, photographs, costumes, and artifacts from his scientific studies.
