The Year 1 company began in 2020, 400 years after the first recorded documentation of Africans arriving in the “New World” in 1619 - As slaves.

2020 was a year of pain, and sorrow -and it was a year of ingenuity. The incredible disparities along racial, economic, and gendered lines (along with many others) were highlighted in the most undeniable ways during the hellish intersection of a Trump administration and a Covid-19 epidemic.

People saw that the only way to be “ok” was to think and act differently than they ever had before.

With Year 1, it is our goal to persist in this mindset.

We recognize that the unfairness of our world is observable and blatant, but that it is also subtle, and internal. Our outer world is sometimes indistinguishable from our inner world.

We recognize that everyone needs a new beginning. We restart ourselves continually. We use new years, and birthdays, and spring cleaning, and new jobs as ways to enter into new beginnings.

Year 1 is about new beginnings. Year 1 is about ending self-sabotage. It is about seeing ourselves, and understanding what we need. It is about reversing hereditary trauma.

Year 1 is the name we have given to that alchemical process, in which we turn curses into blessings.
