We've had a few inquiries from our loyal customers, so we feel we should make an announcement: our tree farm will be closed again this year for the holidays.

We've had quite an eventful year, and some of it not good -- but we're still alive and kicking. Our proprietor has his hands full with other projects, and unfortunately selling trees is not in the cards for '21.

We wish you and your families a very happy holidays. Stay safe, be thankful for what you've got, and all the best to you!

The gales of November are here in force this evening. In a normal year we would already be knee-deep in balsam, white pine and cedar. But 2020 is no ordinary year. And so we are choosing not to be open this Christmas season.

For 40 years Goslin's Greenery has been providing wreaths, garland, trees and other Christmas greens to businesses and homes in Northern Michigan. We are proud of the connections we have built during that time. We'll miss our yearly check-ins with you dear visitors (it feels strange to call you customers). We'll miss talking with friends in the pine smoke of our back room. We'll miss inducting new members of the Birch Bark Star Club. And we'll miss breathing in the pine smell that tracks us home each evening.

But we know this is the right decision. We want you to be safe amid this COVID maelstrom, and we know that Christmas isn't going anywhere. It will outlast us all. We'll take this year off to think about the path ahead.

As the realities of climate change become clearer than ever, and friends on the West Coast endure Biblical fires, we feel urgency - but also pride in the tens of thousands of trees we have planted, and which continue to grow, in our little corner of Emmet County. At 78 years old, our founder is still planting trees. We all have to do what we can.

This is our prayer to you this Christmas: have hope, plant the seedlings of a better future, and do what you can to safeguard this miraculous creation for the seven generations to come.

Goslin's Greenery held a staff meeting this week to draw the winners of our ticket giveaway. Five lucky people (who had stopped by our barn during the season and entered their names) were chosen at random to receive free tickets to next summer's Chamberfest Cheboygan -- a series of musical concerts celebrating Beethoven's 250th birthday. All concerts will be held at the Cheboygan Opera House, an 1888 historic gem that has wonderful acoustics. Tickets are going out in the mail to our winners on Friday, Jan. 3.

From all of us at Goslin's Greenery, best wishes and Happy New Year 2020!

Every year we’re asked if we provide mail-order for Christmas trees. We don’t, but we’ve shipped trees to our loved ones when they were far away. This is what worked for us:
- Never mail to states that have restrictions on mailing greens.
- Plan to have your tree ready to ship on Monday
- Find a tree that’s got room between the branches, has a small trunk diameter, and less than 6 feet tall (you can always cut a larger tree and use the branches for other projects). We’ve been happy with the Fraser firs that we inadvertently planted a little too close together about 10 years ago.
- Build a shipping box out of cardboard to the length you need, and approximately 15” square depending on your tree size.
- Slide the tree in trunk first, allowing the branches to gently bend upwards.
- Tell the recipient to trim the bottom and put the tree in water immediately. After a day or two the branches will unbend.

Tree stands are typically made for larger trees than what you’ll ship. But if the recipient has the type of stand with 5 long posts they can extend the length of the posts by using wine or champagne corks on the end.
