What symbols do you notice?
Feathers, leaves, a yin yang made up of cowrie shells and seeds, hamsas…

This piece is titled “sankofa ibeji”, which explores two West African cultural concepts.
Artworks by rosesharon oates are often woven with deep meaning and symbolism.

“Sankofa” means “go back and get it”, and is represented by a mythical bird with its feet facing forward and its head facing back, creating a distinct heart shape. It teaches that the past serves as a guide for moving into the present and future.

“Ibeji” means divine twins, with Taiwo and Kehinde representing two different yet harmonious beings. Together, Sankofa Ibeji represents a perfect cosmic awareness of reflection.
This piece represents sacred duality, using a combination of West African proverbs from the Akan people of Ghana and the Yoruba people of Nigeria.
