Freedom is precious—more dear than life itself. So how should each of us value Spiritual Liberty? In this small booklet by Spurgeon, we are reminded that sin’s chain binds us, sin’s penalty hangs over our heads, guilt threatens us, sin’s dominion oppresses us, the Law justly condemns us, and death stands by to carry us to our just doom. But the Holy Spirit through the gospel of Jesus can set the captive free, because “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2Co 3:17).

The power of the written word over the centuries is astounding! Augustine was converted from paganism and immorality by simply reading from the book of Romans; Luther was set free by reading the same book; John Wesley had his heart "strangely warmed" as he heard a reading of Luther's preface to the book of the Romans. And the list goes on... Only eternity will tell how many have been changed, transformed, and blessed forever by written words, both those inspired by God and those based on the inspired Word.
