Noted for his onstage jokes, rhinestone-studded wardrobe, and duet partnership with Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner’s celebrated career spanned almost sixty years.

Wagoner’s big break came in 1951 when Springfield, Missouri, radio station KWTO hired him as an on-air performer. He soon signed to RCA Records and became a mainstay on the ABC television show “Ozark Jubilee” (1955–1956). With his career on the rise, Wagoner moved to Nashville with his wife and three children in 1956, and joined the Grand Ole Opry the following year.

In 1960, Wagoner was invited to host a syndicated television show that would expand into nearly one hundred markets with more than three million viewers in its impressive two-decade run. "The Porter Wagoner Show" featured celebrities such as Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Tex Ritter, and longtime cast member Dolly Parton.

As his television audience expanded, Wagoner ran up a string of solo hits that included “Misery Loves Company” ( #1, 1962), “The Cold Hard Facts of Life” ( #2, 1967), and fourteen Top Ten hits with Parton, including “Please Don’t Stop Loving Me” ( #1, 1974).

In the wake of Roy Acuff’s death in 1992, Wagoner became the unofficial spokesperson for the Grand Ole Opry until his death in 2007, just a few months after his fiftieth anniversary as an Opry member. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002.
