A thriving Monstera plant tells its story from the ground up. While the large fenestrated leaves often get all the attention, the health of the roots is just as important and revealing. Healthy roots are typically white or light tan, firm to the touch, and can grow impressively long. In many cases, the root system beneath the soil mirrors the size and strength of the plant above it. This kind of balanced growth is a strong indicator that the plant is receiving the right nutrients, water, and support.
What lies beneath also speaks volumes about the soil’s microbiome. When roots stretch deeply and branch freely, it often points to a soil environment that is rich with life—beneficial bacteria, fungi, and organic matter working together to nourish the plant. A healthy soil mix should feel loose and well-aerated, with a slightly earthy scent. If both the foliage and roots are growing with strength and consistency, it suggests you’re not just growing a beautiful Monstera, you’re supporting a full and healthy underground ecosystem.
For each plant I own, I build a custom soil blend tailored to its specific needs, treating the soil as the foundation of the plant’s entire well-being. I mix in elements like biochar, high-quality fish compost, and bat guano among other organic amendments, with the intention of creating a living, breathing medium that supports vibrant growth.
My approach is inspired by the ancient Amazonian soil known as terra preta—rich, dark earth teeming with microbial life and long-lasting fertility. By mimicking this naturally enhanced soil, I aim to cultivate a micro-ecosystem in every pot, where roots can thrive, nutrients cycle efficiently, and the plant grows with strength and resilience from the ground up.
