Space marines and sorta any large metal vehicles etc. My general theory on them is that less is more. Edge highlighting and lining get you a long way. There are a billion ways to skin the cat and I encourage people to chime in. Caveat before I show these, I am not great just trying to help people that have not yet surpassed me. Also these are batch painted kinda for speed. Forgive my mistakes. I am doing all I can to not go back and just let them be done.
Anyway to the pics. The primary difference between the left and right pics is I used Agrax Earthshade to line the model and a lighter shade of the primary color to hit just the edges and in some cases high spots to indicate light on the models on the left.
I included a couple process pics to show what I literally mean. Only put the Agrax in this case in lines and in joints etc. I am not washing the entire model with it. That’s not a bad thing to do, it’s just I am using subtle changes here. If I hit the entire model the whole thing would change. My lines would be less pronounced because the rest of the model would have picked up color from it as well. The edge highlight is ONLY the literal edges. It could be much cleaner and there could be transitions but that’s not what I am doing here. I want the lightest color I can do in one hit. Time matters in army painting.
I provide 2 models with just the top fone do you can see what I am doing and the difference. Again I could have gone darker etc etc. this is rough technique.
I purposely put a big splotch on the top of the model, so you could see it’s fine. Dry it. Hit with primary color again and you’re good. Another nice bye product of this is, touch ups are easy.
I was slow doing this because I took pictures etc. it takes no time at all.
Anyway happy painting ya’ll!

Hey guys. Ok I can’t say if it’s right or wrong but this is how I handle tufts. To me most of them are just too big on a base. I am going for blasted heath or some such. Not really a place with a ton of living vegetation.
The following captures pics of 2 different brands. Some of the Vallejo could work straight out of the package but even they are big for what I am going for.
Instead I found one of the warlord tufts that was so smashed it could not be used anyway. I tore off a chunk that I think captures generally what I am going for.
I cut the bottom to make it flat. Compacted the bottom of it abit to fit into cracks between rocks and trimmed it abit to look like a normal plant. Tallest bits in the middle.
Glued it in place with superglue. If I need to I can touch up the paint around it but not usually needed. Keep in mind you can get a good look by applying a touch of snow here and there etc if you are painting a snow or partial snow base. Tie it all together. If I remember or decide it needs it I might use small scissors to make it more realistic. I am supposed to be batch painting so the level of detail I am giving is probably too much but terminators are easily my favorite model. Literally the model that brought me into the hobby all those years ago.
Anyway it’s also a cost saver since your tufts go further. You can afford to place different types since each takes less room.
Hope this is helpful!
