Well, little Mama, “Gidget” is done laying eggs after a long 24 hours. She laid well over 700 eggs. Not bad for a first time Mom. So proud of Daddy, “Kemah” too. A great pairing from first timers. I’ll be posting pics tomorrow. I want her to just rest quietly tonight. She ate 5 worms for dinner!

And we have eggs beginning to be laid.

You've decided you want an axolot and need some advice? Here are the basics.
Housing:
- Axolotls have a big bioload. This basically means that they p**p, a lot and frequently. The higher number of gallons you have in a tank the better it is to compensate for this.
- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: One axolotl = 20 gallon tank, add additional 10 gallons per axolotl.
Décor:
- Unless that axolot is over 5 inches, DO NOT PUT SAND IN YOUR AQUARIUM. PERIOD.
- No gravel or rocks.
- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: One hide per axoloti. Hides include PVC pipes, common kitchenware (mugs, vases), aquarium décor, and reptile hides.
-Caution is needed with all hides. Axolotis have soft skin and it will easily rip/scratch. Ensure there are no rough edges. Also, reptile hides are not guaranteed to last underwater. Frequent inspections are required to ensure they are not breaking down and leeching chemicals into the water.
- Minimal lighting is preferred. If you choose to use lighting, then make sure there are plenty of hides and try to limit the amount of light they receive.
Food:
• NO BLOODWORMS. THEY ARE A SNACK ONLY.
- Pellets, worms, and Repashy grub pie are safe as staple diets.
Filtration:
- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: double the filtration rated for your tank. 20 gallon tank requires at least 40 gallons of filtration.
- Filters: Canister vs Hang on back - personal choice. These are mechanical filtration devices. Highly recommended to have at least one. Sponge filters. These are biological filtration devices. These help with beneficial bacteria and can double as a bubbler.
Environment:
- Axolotis require cold water. Temperatures between 55 - 65'F are ideal. This can be met with either a chiller or with fans.
- Air stones/bubblers/air pumps are not necessary, but will help with aerating your water and surface agitation.
Equipment:
- These are necessary items - DO NOT GET AN AXOLOTL WITHOUT THESE!
- Prime, or other water conditioner. This is necessary to condition your tap water and remove harmful chemicals.
Prime
• API Freshwater Master Kit. This is to test the levels in your tank to
TAPE
ensure it is safe for you axolotl. Do not rely on the strips or what your local pet store says. It is better to have this on hand, as the levels in your tank directly relate to the care of your axolotl.
- A tub. Sterlite tubs from Walmart are commonly used. This is a form of temporary housing while your tank is cycling or during illness or while cleaning the tank.

Everybody ready? It’s almost time to begin breeding for Fall 2026 through May 2027. I’m going to be breeding a hypo copper female to a possibly “All Het” melanoid GFP male first. This will help determine if he truly is “All HET”. We’ll see what we get. :)

In loving memory of Pepto. You made beautiful babies and taught me that a person can truly love an axolotl. My heart is broken. I’ll see you again on the other side of the bridge, my sweet girl. ❤️

When looking to purchase an axolotl, it is highly recommended to buy from reputable online breeders or specialized local fish stores rather than chain pet shops. Specialized breeders track genetic lineages to prevent inbreeding, ensuring you receive a much healthier animal with fewer risks of genetic defects.
