***Prepare Before You Escape***

"Leaving can be the most dangerous time for survivors, so, if possible, plan ahead of time where you’ll be going (a shelter, friend’s house the abuser doesn’t know, a hotel or short-term rental or another option) and how to get there safely. If an abuser has threatened you in the past, try not to give away any clues that you’re planning to leave. You can involve your children in safety planning as well." - Domesticshelters.org

1. Prepare
-Have a "Go Bag" hidden so you have it ready when the opportunity comes for you to escape quickly. Fill it with snacks, waters, toiletries, an extra change of clothes, and your phone charger (a local domestic violence shelter will have emergency supplies for you in case you do not have access to these for your bag). Make arrangements with a domestic violence shelter or a friend or family member you can trust during your transition so you have the support you need.
2. Plan
-Make a list somewhere of the possible scenarios that might occur if an abuser tries to prevent you from leaving. Think of "reasons' to leave that would be valid, like a doctor's appointment, or going to run an errand. Try to hide any objects the abuser could use to hurt you.
3. After Leaving
-Be aware of your surroundings! Take action quickly to do what is needed to keep you safe such as filing a Protective Order, or changing your phone number and personal account information. Keep things private on social media so the abuser cannot find your new location. An advocate at a local domestic violence shelter can assist you throughout this time.
