Ever had a stopper stuck? Especially when the glass and stopper has frosted edges it can be tough. With antique glass you need to be careful but it can be done with a bit of patience! Immerse the bottle up to the just below stopper line in water and then slowly add hot water until hot to touch - let sit 15 minutes - the bottle should feel warm stopper not- then slowly emerse stopper in a bowl of cold ice water - stopper only - for a few minutes until cool to touch. With a wooden spoon SLOWLY pry up the stopper - it may take several try’s but this always works! Antique glass can be fragile but cut glass like this Victorian small jam jar - is a bit sturdier - remember- patience!!!!if the rim is narrow with tea towel in hand again slowly pull up on stopper. I’ve done this with success also on antique perfume bottles - but again patience and do not try to rock stopper-pull straight up!

I’m asked about silver polish a lot. Other than Silvo which is also a favorite (waiting on a new order or is show the can) Goddards is the ONLY polish I’ve used for 40 years. Period and I’ve tried them all! If a company has been in business as long as most of these antique silver pieces are old (established in 1839)then good enough for me!

The before and after - it’s a rainy day so perfect to catch up on polishing which quite honestly I enjoy. These are a lovely pair of English Thomas Blakemore silverplate candlesticks. If not familiar with this company - started in 1847 and still manufactures today. High quality metalwares. These heavy silverplate candlesticks date from the 1970s and are lovely reproductions of 19th c ones!

I’m all about repurposing antiques - first you have a quality made product - second - beautiful is beautiful and third - looking very clever is nice as well! These cocktail forks - I guess it is elegant to have but not used on a regular basis (unless you have a retinue of staff maybe) thus repurpose - make pickles? Tie one on the jar of your treasured recipe. Or buy a jar of cornichons (Trader Joes of course) and tie a fork on it! If you have a really special friend add some pate and toasted French bread slices - that’s my kind of gift!!! All silverplate - the small ones are Swedish.
