It’s been a hot start to summer and yet some perennials have been unfazed by the heat and lack of rain. Summer phlox Red Riding Hood has been a real trooper! No mildew (which afflicts many phlox) and has yet to be watered. Quite hardy, long blooming, and little maintenance make this phlox a great addition to the summer garden. Full sun and expect 2’ tall.

Heralding spring are two of our favorite trees: Eastern Redbud and Magnolia Jane. Truly low maintenance…just plant them and enjoy their annual visit each spring. Sun-part shade, wet or dry and hardy through zone 5. Note redbuds grow wider than tall and Jane grows as a multi stemmed shrub/tree.

It’s Joe Pye W**d season! For those with the space we’ve long admired this perennial. Loves the heat and will tolerate boggy conditions. A butterfly magnet a plus. Can easily reach 6’ so the back of the garden is it’s home. With the rainy summer it’s flower heads seem extra large this year! Blooms July through September.

I admit to being skeptical about 2021 perennial of the year Calamintha Nepeta but have since become a fan. A tidy clump that flowers July till frost. Here seen fronting a bed of Cheyenne Spirit coneflowers. Requires sun,heat, and dry conditions. Excellent border plant!

New for us in 2022 is Dianthus “rockin red”. Unlike other Dianthus this blooming machine gets 18” tall and has been in bloom since early May with no signs of letting up! Full sun and somewhat dry seem ideal.
