Artist Spotlight: Home Grown Instruments: Zach Farley- Patagonia, AZ
Part sculpture, part instrument, and entirely one of a kind.
Local artisan and musician Zach Farley has unveiled a remarkable new creation: a handcrafted three-piece Raven Flute, available now for $500. Inspired by one of nature's most intelligent and mysterious birds, this striking flute features a trio of raven heads, carved details, red beads, and rich dark tones that make it as captivating to look at as it is to play.
This flute is absolutely amazing! Zach sculpted the main body of the flute from PVC pipe and heated to get the form he wanted. The “feather” look on the heads is plumbers putty! And the eyes are red glass, as well as wood and coral cabochons!
Now, for all you music techies out there, the main flute on top is tuned to E minor. The flutes on either sides are known as musical drones, one is in the key of E and the other can change its drone notes; E, G, A, B. As a testament to Zach’s music teaching abilities…he saw the “deer in the headlights” look on my face and totally explained musical drones in a way I could understand!!!
Zach's instruments are known for blending craftsmanship, creativity, and a deep connection to the natural world. Built to come apart into three sections for easy transport, this Raven Flute is both a functional musical instrument and a conversation piece worthy of display.
Raised in Patagonia, Zach has spent years creating flutes, dulcimers, banjos, ukuleles, and other unique instruments through Home Grown Instruments. Every piece reflects his hands-on approach, artistic vision, and lifelong passion for music.
Whether you're a musician, collector, bird lover, or simply appreciate exceptional craftsmanship, this Raven Flute is something special.
Stop by and see it in person. The photos are impressive, but the real thing is even better.
