Spring Pruning Tips:
▪ Prune during active growth periods. This will allow trees to heal themselves at the wounds.
▪ Prune trees with summer blossoms in winter, before the buds break.
▪ Prune with sharp, clean tools, using small, clean cuts. It’s also best to disinfect the tools you use with rubbing alcohol.
▪ It is never recommended that you prune more than 25 percent of your tree's foliage at one time. Consider cabling and bracing as an alternative. In some cases, that might be better for your tree than pruning it.
▪ Only prune dry trees with angled cuts, which helps the water drip from the branches. Wet branches have been known to spread disease.
▪ Avoid pruning branches that connect at a V-shaped crotch.
▪ Remember that topping can structurally damage your trees, which not only risks their health, but could lead to unwanted liability. Not to mention the damage it does to the beauty of the tree...
