- Remaining Tubas at Horn Guys -
Tuba friends and music friends,
As I power down The Horn Guys and prepare to let the Pasadena building go later this year, I have a few tubas left. Plans are to sell remaining small inventory from my home via eBay - not so different from the beginning of this business in 2000.
Here's what's left: one each. You can see the list of instruments through this link: https://hornguys.com/pages/daily-menu-of-tubas-euphoniums
Alexander 163 CC - Classic large bore 5/4 5V rotary CC from Mainz with gold brass bell. I wonder if most everyone who craved these has retired. Very light, all sheet metal bows, Meinlschmidt rotors. No it's not pitchy; it's the new design but its lively, captivating sound still heralds back to Chester Schmitz and many other great players.
Gronitz PCK CC - 6/4 York-style CC, similar to HB Grand Orchestra, MW Baer and Yorkaha, in silver plate. Pistons by Meinlschmidt, maybe they are MAW, can't tell on this one. The tuba is custom built in Freiburg by Andreas Klingspor who purchased the Gronitz company upon Dietrich Kleinehorst's retirement to add to his Klingspor line of custom tubas.
Gronitz PF125 F - Large piston 5V F, in between the size of YFB-822 and MW-2250, in polished raw brass, features MAW pistons by Meinlschmidt, lightweight seamed bows. Also made by Andreas Klingspor in Freiburg.
Miraphone 1292 CC Used - This is the Alan Baer New Yorker model, a variation of the 1291: 5/4 CC with piston valves, large 3-loop body in CC with medium leadpipe and large PT-size receiver. Used but really top condition like the owner never practiced. Offers accepted.
Miraphone S186 CC Used - Early-2000's era 5V 4/4 size rotary tuba, this one is the "less nickel with simplified trim" version they made for some years to save a few dollars. (Narrator: They didn't save any money.) Otherwise it's nearly identical to current production. Two-step fifth slide. "A" condition but I need to sort the linkages first, which are noisy. Owned by Jim Paoletti from Monterey who has sailed onward. Out for clean and tune at Brass Mavens, back in May. Price not decided, offers accepted.
Mirafone 186 CC Used - Circa 1976 version 5V 4/4 rotary tuba with the quiet DVS nylon linkages, originally imported through Mirafone USA in Sun Valley. Looking worn but still worthy, made the old way with lightweight sheet brass bows. Also owned by Jim Paoletti, lots of miles on this one. Jim Self helped him pick this one out. Also at Brass Mavens for a refresh, returning in May. Price not decided, offers accepted.
Adams E1 Euph - Besson style 3+1 euph made in Netherlands, brass with silver plate. New with Marcus Bonna case. Very cool adjustable gap mouthpiece receiver with which you can fine tune to really make it sing - I love this feature. The last Adams euph took 3 years to get and new ones cost $1300 more than this one due to tariffs. Fail.
JP Sterling 374ST Euph - 3+1 euph made in China for John Packer UK, this is nearly the Euro sound and projection and they're among the best of the instruments coming out of that part of the world, also half the money. In silver plate with tuning trigger and Bonna replica case. New in box. John Packer is the new powerhouse of the UK. They own Michael Rath trombones, Sterling euphs, Taylor trumpets, Smith-Watkins trumpets, and they offer UK and CN versions of nearly all their instruments to cater to several price ranges. Grab this one at a great price.
Pricing: cash or check can be cheaper; pick up is cheaper. Instrument financing is available through Synchrony Bank who has similar terms to those offered at Best Buy or Home Depot: 6 months or 36 months financing. Sales are final.
Tuba cases and mutes are sold out, some Miraphone gig bags remain. I have remaining stock of tuba mouthpieces by Miraphone, Robert Tucci (also euph), Ferguson/James New (Herrick/Minick/Laskey replicas) and Ivan Giddings (steel). Two Bonna euph cases are left, also one SKB. Don't wait; most items are existing stock only.
