I was recently challenged by a group I belong to that recreates the medieval period to use my skills to create a gift. The theme: Games and Entertainment. The challenge: to make it something that is “period” and specific to the person I was given and keep in under $35. I received a survey that she completed. Her persona is a 14th century Irish lady whose colors are blue, black, and white. Here’s what I came up with. It’s called Brandubh. It’s an Irish board game known to have been played at least a thousand years ago and is the smallest member of the Tafl family of games.
Starting from linen squares and blank, wooden game pieces, I assembled and painted and even carved a crown using the colors she likes. I actually didn’t like the crown that I carved so I found a bead that could be used. Now she has 2 crowned pieces to choose from to play with. Then, I added little magnets to keep the pieces on the board (because fabric isn’t always so flat), but not strong enough to lift the board when the pieces are moved. Lastly, I made a lucet cord so that the game board will become a pouch in which to hold its own pieces.
I had so much fun brainstorming this piece. It’s what I love to do. Create something original, something customized to the person it’s intended for. Thanks to the SCA and KAOS for this opportunity to do something new (but also old) and interesting.
