Heres today's sounds of the frog world... North American Green Toad, Anaxyrus debilis. This little guy means business!

These guys are a very active species and as adorable as they are pretty. Full grown and right at the 2 inch mark or under!

Just a photo shoot of a few Barking Treefrogs, including our first out of the water this year! 😍.... and an American Green Treefrog because she lives with them and deserves some love too!

I spend most summer nights out searching for new populations of the various native species we breed here at the facility. I always take the very few opportunities afforded to me to go out in search of that once in a lifetime Oak Toad.... but I dont always end up with my target species... While searching for Oaks, I came across this absolutely STUNNING Barking Treefrog. He will be the leader of my selective breeding project we will start up in a few months.

Any ideas for names?

No new frog call video to post yet so I decided to share a close up of just how beautiful the Barking Treefrog tadpoles actually are!

Aren't they just adorable!

On tonight's episode of sounds of the frog world, we have a beautiful male Couch's Spadefoot, Scaphiopus couchii, calling all the ladies to the dance pond.

These are a desert species of Spadefoot, very unlike the Eastern Spadefoot. Making them much simpler to care for. They live most of their lives buried underground to avoid the intense heat of the desert sun, emerging during heavy rains to breed. Their tadpoles hatch and morph into tiny little toadlets in record time to avoid the water drying out and wiping them all out.

Why do the American shows not look like this!?

Heres a quick glimpse into the Barking Treefrogs, Hyla gratiosa, here at the facility, including 3 different tadpole sizes.

The chirping in the background is Enoch, our noisy yet adorable Black-Throated Magpie Jay who just wants in on the attention. We will have to give him his own video some day.

Most of these frogs appear all green, but when theyre fired up for breeding or establishing dominance in a territory, they can go completely brown or the more common purplish hue with rosettes.

These are by far my favorite US native species. They are a little more flighty than a Whites Treefrog, but they have a very similar d***y personality.

The male Barking Treefrog call, Hyla gratiosa. They do change colors, and this male is showing his beautiful purple rosette coloring.

The frogs that are calling faster and more relentlessly in the background are American Green Treefrogs, Hyla cinerea.

Check out the next post to see some of the Barking Treefrogs and 3 different size tadpoles! I think Barking treefrog tadpoles are one of the most beautiful tadpole species out there, native or exotic!

Bill decided he wasn't going to let some normal steal the show... So here's Bill the Albino Chubby frog, Kaloula pulchra, making the water dance.

Just sharing some Chubby love...

Male Chubby Frog, Kaloula pulchra, with his mating call. These are normals but we do have albinos that will hopefully be producing as well, that male is just a wee bit shy and won't perform on film 🤣
