I post this every Spring REMINDER TO KEEP YOUR FLOCK HEALTHY- As a small poultry breeder in Western Kentucky, we have learned the hard lessons of a new flock owner and unknowing mistakes that we were making that potentially led to the depopulation of our flock five years ago. We have a come a long way in our knowledge of the different diseases that can and will affect your flock. Full of heartbreak from the loss of my favorite feathered friends, we sought out answers and methods of prevention. With many long days and nights of research and contacting many specialists in the field from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Purdue University in Indiana and University of Georgia, we started again on our journey. We are PROUD to be able to say that we are the only small poultry breeder in the state of Kentucky to achieve and maintain not the only the NPIP certification for Pullorum-Typoid (P-T), Salmonella Enteritidis, and Avian Influenza (AI), but also Mycoplasma gallisepticum and (MG), Mycoplasma Synoviae CLEAN. Our farm is tested every three months in order to maintain this certification. What this status means is that you get healthy birds from a farm that is What this status means is that you get healthy birds from a farm that is tested CLEAN from these diseases. Anyone of these diseases can kill your birds and make your birds very sick. In some cases causing your entire flock to have to be depopulated and let me tell you, it is unbearable to have this happen. It makes you want to never start again in fear that it will happen again. So this if for you Poultry Enthusiasts or Backyard Flock owners who want to take a few steps to help lessen your risk of making your birds sick. 1) Know who are buying your birds or hatching eggs from- research their farm or ask for a referral list of past customers who have purchased birds from them 2) Purchase your birds from NPIP Certified Sellers if possible 3) If you go to swap meets, fairs or even farm stores that have chicks or birds including turkeys, ducks or other fowl make sure that you have an “extra” pair of boots or shoes that you wear only at these types of places and that are disinfected with bleach water. Do not get out of your car with these shoes and walk on your ground. You can transfer some of these diseases that way. 4) If you go to another farm that has birds- wash your car tires off before you go home. We have learned to never buy from farms that sell Turkey or Geese in conjunction with chickens. Turkey and Geese are high carriers of MS and MG. 6) Do not allow wild birds to free range with scratch around your chickens. Wild birds carry these diseases and will make your birds sick. 7) Keep their water accessible to your birds only. (We use the hanging buckets so wild birds and dogs and cats cannot drink from it.)
I bought these mums last fall in 5 gallon pots I think. Planted immediately. JUST WOW!!!
Tomorrow is the last day of sign ups to ensure a shirt for the Run for Hope. We turn our order in on Thursday for that. If anyone at your business or in your family would like to participate, please sign up at "active.com" search "Run For Hope 2017" today. We are so appreciative that your business is involved with this with us and we are well on our way to meeting our goal of a $5000 grant for an adoptive family through Hope That Binds. If you would like to set up a table the morning of the run to promote your business please feel free to do so. No sales are allowed per the Parks Department, but giving things away with your business info or even giving things away to participants in exchange for a donation to Hope That Binds is fine, too. To set up a table please be at the park no later than 7:15 the morning of June 24 at shelter 10. We will be using the entrance by the baseball fields. Please contact me with any questions. Thank you so so much. May God be glorified.
