Russ Gremel spent almost his entire life in the same Chicago neighborhood. He lived simply, never married, and didn’t feel the need for luxury. He was known as a gentle and patient Boy Scout leader for more than 60 years, teaching boys how to respect nature, be self-reliant, and stay curious about the world. He believed happiness came from small, everyday joys: long walks, familiar routines, and quiet connection with the outdoors.
In the late 1940s, he bought $1,000 worth of Walgreens stock. He didn’t follow the market or analyze trends. He just held onto it while life unfolded around him. Over time, Walgreens grew into a national chain and that modest investment became worth more than $2 million. In 2017, at age 98, Russ donated it all to the Illinois Audubon Society. The money was used to create a 400 acre wetland wildlife sanctuary, a place where plants, birds, and animals could thrive. It was the kind of gift that aligned perfectly with the quiet values he lived by every day.
