Adam here checking in from the road with my own new release picks for the week! I’m just getting back after traveling on the east coast all week buying up some collections to bring back to the shops. I tried to find these new releases I knew I was looking for and my fellow Department of Record Stores shops The Sound Garden of course had them both. A quick in and out stop but it was my first time there and the shop was sick.

GENGHIS TRON
This is it. One of my all time favorite bands has returned with another excellent new record. SIGNAL FIRE continues their trajectory of incorporating experimental metal with electronica and kraut sounds for an incredible result. I’m not saying it sounds like NIN. But if you like NIN you’ll find a lot to enjoy here with tons of unique stuff going on.

STORMKEEP
Riff filled melodic / sorta “symphonic” black metal that delivers on all fronts. If you like late era Emperor (foolish if you don’t) and like that new Worm album from this year then THE NOCTURNES OF ISWYLM is gonna be essential listening for you.

As Maddie said Friday, lots more great stuff on the walls. Go get em.

This Friday is a BIG WEEK for summer time. Lots of solid jams, but I haven’t had time to sit down and spin anything yet so no Adam’s picks this week ALTHOUGH there’s plenty of stuff I am VERY STOKED to listen to later after I’m done running around.

But before the list, here's the reason I didn't have time to spin records this morning: IT WAS VAN PICKUP DAY. I finally bought the mid-life crisis vehicle: a music mover for the record shop! We're ready to come pick up all your records, and hopefully never stepping foot in a uhaul location ever again. So get at us if you have a collection of SICK RECORDS (and CDs, and Tapes) to sell, we'll come through and load it up and hopefully I can pay this thing off quick!

New ones from Death Cab for Cutie and Modest Mouse are out now, of course. Along with the Blood Incantation score for their documentary All Gates Open, and the Voivod SYMPHONIQUE album doing classic tracks with a full symphony?! I REALLY wanna hear this new Slift album on Sub Pop, that’s going on the turntable first later tonight and I already know the NIN Tron: Ares DIVERGENCE kicks ass, I might actually dig that more than the actual soundtrack. New 21Savage and Vince Staples records are here as well, and I know Seth has been very hyped on the new Staples singles, so I’m looking forward to hearing that one later as well.

The new jams don’t stop there. Here’s the quick rundown on the rest of the highlight new jams.

NEW
Old Crow Medicine Show
Red Clay Strays
Deer Tick
Seahaven
Of Montreal
Widowspeak
Hammock
Zoh Amba
Niall Horan
Zara Larsson
Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk)
Sierra Ferrel (Third Man Live)
August Burns Red

REISSUES
August Burns Red
King Gizzard (Live, of course)
Morbid Angel Laibach remixes
Elliott Smith
Dinosaur Jr.
Porcupine Tree (x5!!)
Earth (Pentastar)
Van Halen (Live)

Tony Rice
Blue Note Tone Poet Reissues (x2)

There’s actually a ton more on the wall aside from the those. Insane week for reissues and new releases.

ADAM'S FAVORITE RECORDS OF 2025

Now that the year is half over I figured it's time to post my list. I've had this written up for a while, but really took my sweet time posting the rest of the staff's favorites. Lots of obvious ones if you know me and my taste, but some records surprised me. CHECK EM OUT. Photo by Dave Burke of course.

At the Oshkosh store we have one metric Aedon of free records on the sidewalk in Oshkosh FOR FREE. Today and every Saturday for the rest of the summer, as long as the farmers market runs. Oshkosh only for now. Maybe some in Appleton in the coming weeks.

Of course both stores also have 200-300 fresh used in the new arrival bins, too. But you gotta pay for those.

Used drop photo w/Crimson/SOAD/BoC is Oshkosh
Used drop photo w/Bouncing Souls/Sloppy Seconds/Beatles is Appleton

It’s a great weekend for new records and reissues for my BIRTHDAY WEEKEND. You gotta come grab something now that I’m getting old.

Sick new jams and a crucial reissue for Adam’s Picks. Great stuff for those that are tired of all the metal and hardcore records I keep picking (that’s a you problem, those records are good).

NEW:
Boards of Canada return with INFERNO. If you dig what they’ve done, you’re gonna be pleased. If you’re not familiar, you’re in for a treat. Minimalist and/or atmospheric electronic jams with tons of groove. Some of these actually seems to remind me a bit of The Books at time with some sampled dialogue.

A new record from Elder album THROUGH ZERO has arrived. I’ve loved this band since they released Reflections of a Floating World in 2017 and this new record delivers, heavily. Exceptional psychy-proggy rock stuff with enormous melodic riffage. Highest recommendations.

REISSUE PICK:
Mortiis THE SMELL OF RAIN has been reissued for the first time in decades. A classic industrial record that’s been long sought after. I’m assuming most of you Wax Trax folks are already on board, but if you’re not then ya better listen up and get into it. Also, dude was first bass player in Emperor so yeah.

Some other highlights. Big import shipments from Plastichead with a TON of great metal stuff and a huge stock up of DEAD KENNEDYS records. KEEP UP PEOPLE. We also got a big old box of KRAUT JAMS from Forced Exposure. Mostly Cluster related projects but also an Alva Noto soundtrack.

ORANSSI PAZUZU last night in Chicago with and my wife (and running into many other buds). It is no exaggeration when I say they are one of the greatest active bands in the world, and I’m fortunate I finally got to see them live. The sold out show at Reggie’s was astonishing, and the energy they radiate made me feel what I imagine it was like seeing Neurosis in the 90s. (I was too little back then but I’ve heard many a great story).

I cannot urge you strongly enough to listen to their 2024 album Muuntautuja, one of the greatest releases of that year. Psych kraut black metal cosmic terror. Entirely unique and completely captivating.
