The July 27 tornado left a path of damaged and lost trees, shrubs and landscapes throughout parts of the Fox Valley. As our neighbors continue the work of rebuilding, we’d like to help.

Ever wonder what this giant, tropical-looking plant is? 🌿

This is castor bean (Ricinus communis)—an annual in Wisconsin that can grow from seed into an impressive, almost tree-sized specimen in a single season.

Its huge, deeply lobed leaves provide incredible color and texture, while the clusters of spiny seed capsules make it even more unusual.

One important thing to know: castor bean seeds are highly toxic if eaten, so this is a plant to admire—not sample—and it should be used with care around children and pets.

Sometimes the most interesting plants in the garden are the ones that make you stop and ask, “What is THAT?”
