I had to pinch myself a little, looking over and seeing Glenn R. Miller sitting in my little bookshop.

Glenn is so much more than an author, he is a true storyteller. He was intelligent, funny, thoughtful and incredibly engaging. He didn’t simply talk to the room; he brought everyone into the conversation. I could have listened to him for hours.

It was much fun hearing him discuss his book Doorman Wanted. I have copies available at River Stone and three of them sold today! It is very good! His novel begins with a fascinating idea: a man inherits an enormous fortune and an Upper East Side apartment building, but instead of stepping into his new life as its owner, he takes a job as the building’s doorman under another name. It’s a clever and thoughtful story about money, identity, our perceptions of others and what it means to use what we have for something good. Hearing Glenn talk about the ideas and experiences behind the book made it even more meaningful.

He also has a new novel, Rough Cuts, coming this fall, set in 1926, just as silent films are giving way to “talkies,” it follows a Hollywood director fighting to protect what he believes is his masterpiece from an ambitious Ohio minister with the power to censor it. Knowing Glenn’s wit and storytelling, I can’t wait to read this one. You can order your copy now through River Stone…and Glenn himself says you should order your book through me!!

This will be a little different from some of our other author events, and I think it will be a really meaningful evening.

Wendi M. Lindenmuth, MPH, will be joining us to talk about her book, Listen to Your Body: Holistic Choices for Managing Chronic Pain. She’ll share some of the healing approaches included in her book, answer questions and lead us through a body scan meditation.

I know many people live with chronic pain, or love someone who does, so I’m grateful we can offer an evening like this at the shop.

We’re so pleased to welcome Lisa Najarian to River Stone for a special signing of her very first book, Girl, Unpack That!

Lisa’s story began with a trip she took following the loss of her mother. During that trip, a conversation over lunch opened the door for several women to share things they had been carrying privately for years. That moment became the beginning of something much bigger and helped inspire Lisa’s work encouraging women to form genuine friendships, support one another and let go of what has been weighing them down.

Lisa is now an author, speaker, entrepreneur and founder of the You Go Girl community. We hope you’ll join us to hear more about her journey, the story behind her book and the lessons she has gathered along the way.

Friends, this is a big one for our little bookshop.l and little town.

On Thursday, October 15, River Stone will welcome Naomi Kritzer, an author whose work has earned some of the highest honors in literature, including the Hugo, Nebula, Edgar, Locus and Minnesota Book Awards.

Naomi grew up in Madison and now lives in St. Paul. She writes for both adults and young adults, and her books have received praise from The New York Times Book Review, NPR, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus and Library Journal. Readers may already know her from Catfishing on CatNet, Chaos on CatNet or Liberty’s Daughter.

Her newest book, Obstetrix, is a gripping near-future medical thriller. Following a highly charged court case, Dr. Liz is abducted by an isolated religious group that desperately needs her medical skills. Trapped inside its compound, she must find a way to survive, escape and help the girls being held there.

It is a tense and thought-provoking story about control, courage and what people are willing to risk for others, and it has already been earning extraordinary attention and praise.

Naomi will be joining us to talk about her writing and sign copies of Obstetrix. Having an author of this caliber come to River Stone is truly an honor, and I hope our community will give her a wonderful welcome.
