The Barrett M82, designated the M107 by the US military, is the most powerful commercially available shoulder-fired rifle in the world. It shoots the powerful 50 BMG, weighs over 29 lbs, has a range of 4.23 miles, and was designed to hunt and destroy heavy armored vehicles.

The M82 has been used by over 60 military forces, including the United States Army, the Irish Republican Army, Mexican drug cartels, and even the Texas Highway Patrol. It was designed in 1980 by Ronnie Barrett, a professional photographer, who imagined the idea of an anti-material rifle while photographing a river gunboat with two mounted M2 Browning Machine Guns. The M82 was first sold as a commercial rifle for sporting but quickly gained the interest of the CIA to give to Afghan fighters in the war against the Soviets. The Swedish Army was the first military contract earned by Barrett in 1989 for 100 rifles, followed by the U.S. Marines for 125 rifles in 1990. Since then, the M82 and its variants have been used in over 60 countries and has played roles in many major conflicts, such as the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, the Iraq War, the Mexican Drug War, and the Russo-Ukrainian War.

Being a professional photographer and having no engineering background, Ronnie Barrett started off the idea for the M82 with a rough hand-drawn sketch. He found his partner, Bob Mitchell, at a sheet metal fabricator in Smyrna, Tennessee. After four short months a prototype was finished. The M82 features a short-recoil operated design. This means that the barrel of the rifle moves back and forth while firing to allow the bolt to unlock from the chamber. The bolt on this rifle uses a 70 lb recoil spring to counteract the force of the bolt. The front of the barrel features a 1.7 lb arrowhead muzzle brake specifically designed to pull the rifle forward using the gasses from the exiting round. All of these factors combined reduce the felt recoil of the M82 from 210 ft-lbs to a mild 70 ft-lbs of felt recoil on the shooter. A 3-inch 12-gauge slug produces around 52 ft-lbs of recoil for comparison.

The M82 fires the powerful .50 BMG cartridge. Developed in the late 1910s by John Moses Browning in conjunction with the M2 Browning Machine Gun. Currently at 105 years, being in service from 1921 to the current day, the .50 BMG has become the cartridge with the longest service within the United States military history. The official designation of the .50 BMG is in an anti-material role, and uses many specialized rounds, the most notable being the APIT (Armored Piercing Incendiary Tracer). The APIT round is designed with a hardened steel or tungsten penetrator core, an incendiary mixture in the tip, and a tracer compound at the base. This specialized design allows for the round to punch through over 1 inch of hardened steel and then explode with a large blast once inside of the target. This is most effective at stopping enemy vehicles by penetrating armor and destroying engine blocks. The .50 BMG can create up to 15,000 ft-lbs of energy compared to the 2,800 ft-lbs of energy of the average 30-06 that the 50 BMG was based off of.

While the technical maximum effective range of the M82 is 2,000 yards (1.13 miles), this weapon system commonly proves that max effective is just a suggestion. The M82 has seen some of the longest rifle shots in the world, holding 5 of the top 20 longest confirmed kills. The longest of which was a 3078.5-yards (1.75-mile), shot by an Australian soldier in 2012. The shot was confirmed by three spotters in Afghanistan.

In 2026 the Barrett M82 and its variants still see widespread use in most Western militaries and among sporting enthusiasts alike. Here at Pearson Guns we have two examples to come and check out. Stop out at the shop or give us a text or call for more information at 641-420-2990.
