Please note, we are online only: no in-person shopping or store pickup. as a general hardware store and locksmith shop. In the 1960's Baltimore began to expand and a new highway, Interstate-83, was built to help relieve the downtown traffic congestion. As a result of this, the store's original location was absorbed into the construction site of the highway and the store was forced to move from its

original location to make way for I-83. The store relocated a block south to 162 North Gay Street.Over the years, Morris Klein's only child, Ted Klein, joined his father at the store, working side-by-side, learning the business."I was running across the street to a hobby distributor, Kramer Brothers, and buying the trains at wholesale," Ted recalled, "Then I'd run back, and we'd sell them at retail. Finally I wondered, 'Why am I doing this? And I convinced my father to put in more trains. Ted slowly converted the hardware store to a model train store. At this time period a Lionel train set was the quintessential toy children dreamed of receiving during the Holiday Season. In the mid-1970's the store was completely converted to trains. HO Scale started to become more popular and M.B. continued to expand the variety of products offered to the model railroad community. This included trains, and their myriad accessories so that the model railroader could build a town with homes, apartment houses, sky scrapers, parks, trees, rolling lawns, police and fire departments, jails, city halls, big towns, bigger cities, lakes, mountains, prairies, bridges, tunnels and national monuments! Throughout the 1980's M.B. Klein established itself as the Model Train Headquarters for all model train enthusiasts, young and old. During the Holiday Season a common sight in Baltimore would be houses throughout the city with train layouts running in the windows. The firehouses throughout Maryland would have large train gardens and the neighborhood children would walk through the display with wide-eyed enjoyment. Practically everyone in Maryland knew that the place to get the greatest selection of train supplies was down at Klein's.The 1990's would be a decade of great expansion. Mail ordering became a common practice for many stores and M.B. Klein was no exception. New scales like G-Scale, N-Scale and Z-Scale added to the growing selection of products. The development of the Internet in the late 1990's brought with it a great opportunity. The staff of the store began building a now-established website to offer the store's wares to a worldwide community. Klein's dedicated, knowledgeable staff now sells to tens of thousands of hobbyists throughout the world! relocated to a new 10,000 square foot location in Cockeysville in the summer of 2007. In 1965, Electro-Motive Division introduced the GP40 model as the successor to the GP35. Upgrades included a turbocharger, increased horsepower (3000 hp) utilizing an EMD 16-645E3 prime mover, passenger variants, and other mechanical changes. The GP40 is distinguished by being 3 feet longer and three radiator fans on the long hood. Between 1965 and 1971, 1,242 units were built for North American railroads. These road switchers were found on all sorts of freight and passenger trains on the mainline, branchlines, and could just as easily switch cars in a yard or around industries. Many of these were later upgraded to GP40-2's and still operate today!

Rapido's HO Scale EMD GP40 features:
• NEW! Early-production truck, handrail and Automatic Train Stop details for New York Central units

• Operating ditch lights and beacons (where appropriate)
• Road-specific battery box doors
• Correct fuel tank sizes per road number
• Multiple styles of stepwells

EMD's GP9 was a highly popular road switcher first built in 1954. Looking to extend their runaway sales numbers, EMD introduced the Phase II variant, built from 1955-57, coming with mechanical and electronic upgrades. These first generation diesels made a name for themselves on mainline and local freights along with switching and branchline duties. Some railroads opted to chop the high hood in later years for better crew visibility. The GP9's were mostly retired by the 1980s, but many survive at museums and in revenue service on shortlines and regionals.

Flatcars have been around since the dawn of railroading, carrying all sorts of loads! 40 foot long steel flatcars debuted in the early 1900s to haul lumber, railcar wheels, cruiser boats, road vehicles, pipes, covered loads, and more! Stakes on either side of the car help to secure the load. Brand new tractors have been a common sight on flatcars since the early 1900s. Today you'll still find tractors placed up front on freight trains today, ensuring farms are always on the move producing fresh goods. Today, longer and modernized flatcars continue working for private owners and freight railroads across North America!

Lionel's O Scale 40' Flatcar with Tractor Load features:
-Die-cast body
-Wood deck
-Die-cast trucks and operating couplers
-Hidden coupler tabs
-Easy conversion to scale wheels and couplers (sold separately)
-4 Die-cast John Deere tractors

In the earliest days of railroading, derailed locomotives and rolling stock could be rerailed using jacks and some good old fashioned elbow grease, but as they grew larger by the mid 1800s, hand-operated cranes were employed. Steam-powered cranes on American railroads became more common come the 1890s, with many built by Brownhoist and Bucyrus. These were converted into diesel power around the 1970s-80s. Modernized cranes are still used today in MOW service and derailment cleanup.

Bachmann's HO Scale 250-Ton Steam Crane with Boom Tender features:
-Detailed painted bodies with precision graphics
-Crane swivels 360 degrees
-Removable k**b adjusts boom position and raises/lowers hook
-Detailed underframes
-Separately applied brake wheel, chimney, railroad tie load, and truss rods on boom tender
-Magnetically operated E-Z Mate® Mark II couplers

The American railroad passenger car's appearance became far more refined by the 1860s. Trains were going longer distances across the country, namely out west, so improvements to passenger comfort had to be made. Clerestory roofs for improved lighting and ventilation, wood construction, oil lamps, wooden seats with upholstery. Longer versions were made to increase capacity but this clerestory design would remain prevalent into the 1930s with steel heavyweight cars.

Bachmann's HO Scale 1860-80s Era Passenger Cars feature:
-19th century design, perfect for early railroading and “Wild West” eras
-“Duckbill” style clerestory roof
-Detailed, painted bodies with precision graphics (where applicable)
-Clear windows
-Separately applied end platform handrails
-Detailed underbody with separately applied truss rods
-Added weight for optimum tracking
-Magnetically operated E-Z Mate® Mark II couplers
-Detailed trucks with see-through sideframes
-Blackened metal wheels with RP25 contours
-Product Measurements: L 6.5 in., W 1.5 in., H 1.5 in.
-Retail Package Measurements: L 7.5 in., W 1.7 in., H 3.4 in.
